Given the demands on the actors and their constantly meeting the challenges, the performances are exemplary. Perhaps the highest point of many high points is the scene during which Iago plays on Othello’s being persuaded of Desdemona’s infidelity. Though Othello insists he’s not “easily jealous,” Iago sees through the demur and only accelerates his cunning.

Staging a Shakespeare tragedy with just four actors sounds like a potentially comic stunt or an unfortunate advertisement of dire economic straits, in either case a radical diminishment of the play. But the Bedlam theater company’s choice to mount a production of “Othello” using just a quartet of performers has a certain literary justification.
Atlas Shakespeare Company has released rehearsal photos for its upcoming production of OTHELLO. Directed by Adriana Alter, the production will run June 17 through June 28 at the Underground Theater at Abrons Arts Center in Manhattan.

Othello is arguably Shakespeare’s most controversial show, often called a “problem show,” given its deep explorations into race and misogyny. Putting on a production of Othello is no small feat, but under the direction of Associate Artistic Director Candice Handy, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, and the entire cast and crew did a fantastic job exploring the intricacies of this infamous show and crafting a production that felt uniquely their own.
