It's official! six-time Tony Award Winner Audra McDonald will return to Broadway this fall, taking on what is widely regarded as the greatest role in musical theatre, “Rose” in GYPSY. We have all of the details!

The PEN America Literary Awards Program has just announced the 2021 career achievement award winners. This year’s honorees are Anne Carson, Kwame Dawes, Daniel Alexander Jones, Pierre Joris, and Tony-winning playwright/director George C. Wolfe with the PEN/Mike Nichols Writing for Performance Award.

Wolfe won Tony Awards for his Broadway productions of 'Angels in America: Millennium Approaches' and 'Bring in 'da Noise/Bring in 'da Funk.'

The awards presented represent the recipient's entire body of work. Other awards given out during the ceremony on April 7th will represent work done over the past year. Those nominees will be announced on March 8th.

George C. Wolfe, the decorated director of the film adaptation of August Wilson's 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom,' has been tapped to direct 'Rustin,' a new film at Netflix produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions. 

San Francisco's annual Jewish Christmas tradition, Kung Pao Kosher Comedy is now in its 27th year! This year's shows take place on December 24-26. The legendary Jewish-comedy-on-Christmas-in-a-Chinese-restaurant extravaganza has been featuring famous Jewish comedians (including the late Henny Youngman and Shelley Berman), Chinese food, and Yiddish proverbs in its fortune cookies ('With one tuchus, you can't dance at 2 weddings') since 1993. Kung Pao is one of San Francisco's longest-running comedy shows, catering to over 2000 people annually: some have attended every year.

When it opened on Broadway in 2006, The Drowsy Chaperone boasted an all-star cast and garnered five Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. You can expect that same quality in Broadway at Music Circus' third production of the summer, with Lynne Wintersteller returning to Sacramento in the title role. Lynne was last seen here in 2017 as Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! and as Mother Superior in Sister Act, where she solidified her place as Music Circus royalty and left audiences anticipating her return. We are now lucky enough to witness that event and Lynne was generous enough to speak with Broadway World Sacramento about her newest role and what we can expect from her in the future.

The oldest festival of its kind in the world, HOT showcases over 100 artists' most daring new work in theatre, dance, music, puppetry, literature, visual arts, and homoeroticism for the whole family! Calogero Lorenzo 'Chazz' Palminteri is a Bronx guy through and through. He lives and breathes New York Yankee pinstripes, is addicted to 'sauce,' and 'tawks' Bronxese.

Wonderful cast directed by Tina Landau is a nice diversion from presidential politics.

'Dave' is a really fun show with a strong cast. It's just the right kind of show we need in DC right now. While questions might emerge as to whether it can play elsewhere, I would suggest that no matter where you live, you may be eager to immerse yourself in a world of political optimism for a few hours.

The Old Globe has opened a window and let in a beautiful breath of fresh air in its latest world premiere musical, BENNY AND JOON, by bookwriter Kirsten Guenther, composer Nolan Gasser, and lyricist Mindi Dickstein. Based on the 1993 MGM film starring Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson and Aidan Quinn, it focuses on three characters, each insulated by their unique circumstances, and how they ultimately overcome their limitations to live the life they've always wanted. Love, family, compassion, and understanding are the foundation of the piece and, as they grow, so do we.
