While the large majority of plays that make it to Broadway were written in English, a small fraction of plays were originally penned in a different language and translated. 

The terrific new musical Real Women Have Curves brings the story of a Mexican family to Broadway. Ana is a first-generation Mexican-American who dreams of becoming a journalist and must navigate being the only one with American citizenship in her family as she finds her own way in the world. Artists from Mexico have brought great and important work to the Broadway stage over the years.

Every so often, a new play or musical being done in Los Angeles catches my eye with a big dose of curiosity. Such is the case with the musical The Translucent Frogs of Quuup with Book by Chris Larner and Music by Mark Stevens, produced by Alchemy Theatre Company and directed by Brian Pirnat with music direction by Brigitte Bellavoine at the Westchester Playhouse from June 14-22. Since I had never heard of it, I decided to speak with the director about the musical and his interest in directing it.

Bay Area bluegrass matriarch, Laurie Lewis, is no stranger to sharing a song and microphone with those lucky enough to share a stage with her, but not often does one catch that energy behind the closed door of a recording studio. Never one to back down from anything, Lewis called upon a number of her West Coast cohorts to bottle up these little jolts of collaborative lightning on her newest release, and Laurie Lewis. Out March 27th, Lewis's 13-track collection of duets isn't a release for release's sake, but a thoughtful contribution to the American music canon, honoring the relationships and friendships that have brought her to the present moment, and also supporting the young musicians who will help carry her legacy into the next generation. “There are things that you can communicate musically together, which are hard to put into words,” Lewis explains. “To have those conversations with people I love and who have been so significant throughout my career is a beautiful thing.”
