BWW Review: RTC's Revived CABARET Tour Returns to OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Aug 16, 2016

CABARET's Tony Award-winning 1998 Broadway revival co-directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, still stands, arguably, as the show's definitive stage iteration. That same vibrant Roundabout Theatre Company production rightly serves as the basis for the newer 2014 revival that is now in the midst of a brand new North American national tour---currently performing at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through August 21. Whether you're a fan of that amazing '98 revival or, better still, the iconic 1972 film adaptation, this brazenly confident new CABARET---a rousing combo-platter of the best elements of the show through its entire history---will surely entertain and, yes, even move you.

It's a little challenging to reach Kim Delgrosso, the artistic director of the national award-winning Center Stage Performing Arts Studios in Orem. This month alone Delgrosso has already promoted and adjudicated dance in Utah, New York, California and British Columbia.

BWW Interview: JESSICA LANG Conquers The World
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 15, 2016

A month ago while Jessica Lang was in Utah working with Ballet West, I rang her to interview her about her incredible year of ongoing success. Years ago I took class with Robert Battle and struck up a dance friendship with his company dancers including Jessica's husband Kanji Segawa. But I have never met Jessica herself. Of course she is the 'It Woman' of dance so I know a bit about her. With her embarrassment of accolades one would have to have their head buried in the sand not to. Besides the rapturous praise she has received for her work, she has also secured numerous commissions (American Ballet Theatre, Birmingham Royal Ballet, The National Ballet of Japan at the New National Theatre Tokyo, Joffrey Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Ballet San Jose, Richmond Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Ailey II, ABT II, Hubbard Street 2, and New York City Ballet's Choreographic Institute, among many others), received many high profile awards (New York City Center Fellow for 2015, 2014 Bessie Award, 2013 Manchester Theatre Award, grants from Jerome Robbins Foundation, the NEA, the Choo San Goh Foundation, and a 2010 Joyce Theater Artist Residency supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation), is opening her own dance center in Long Island City, and is celebrating her company's 5th Anniversary Season at the Joyce. But how did she come to all of this?

BWW Review: AN OCTOROON Brings Hilarity and Hard Truths to Woolly Mammoth
by Ellen Burns - Jun 6, 2016

"Out of every eight drops of my blood, seven are red, but one is black." In those words, spoken with despairing apology in An Octoroon by Zoe, the titular octoroon, the illegitimate daughter of a plantation owner, are revealed the most profound and internalized depths of racism. Like a root vegetable, where the substance of the plant is buried under the ground, it truly visible only when you yank it out to examine what has grown underneath. In this case, what's above ground is a brilliant adaptation by playwright, 2016 Pulitzer finalist (for Gloria), and DC-native Branden Jacobs-Jenkins of an 1859 play by Anglo-Irish Dion Boucicault; a play that caused controversy and sold-out houses in somewhat equal measure when it played at the Winter Garden Theatre in the looming shadow of the Civil War.

BWW Interview: Helen Dallimore, Lucy Durack, Amanda Harrison, Jemma Rix of WITCHES WITH YOUR SSO at Sydney Opera House
by Brodie Paparella - Jun 6, 2016

77 years ago, 'The Wizard of Oz' changed the game for what it meant to be a witch. Since, we've had Maleficent, Samantha, Witchiepoo, Sabrina Spellman, The Halliwell Sisters, Willow, Thessaly, Hermione Granger, Fiona Good and Melisandre, among many others. What is it about these women that so enthrals us? One can imagine a little insight will be shed this coming July when four of Australia's most renowned witches will take the stage of Sydney Opera House and cast a chorus of the songs we've all come to treasure as the musical anthems of some incredibly powerful women. Fortunate enough to be granted audience with Helen Dallimore, Lucy Durack, Amanda Harrison, and Jemma Rix, Witches with your SSO is sure to transcend their wicked performances for a truly enchanting audience experience.

BWW Cabaret Conversation: For BWW Award Nominee RAQUEL CION, Life is All David Bowie, All the Time
by Remy Block - May 13, 2016

Raquel Cion's critically acclaimed cabaret show Me and Mr Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie, has it's final performance of the current run at The Slipper Room on Sunday (May 15) at 8 pm. Cion has been working throughout NYC as an actor, director, and singer for the past 20 years, and has won accolades for her evocative performances. Since she was a teenager, Cion has had a deep, abiding, reverential love for the musician David Bowie, which she incandescently brings to light in this show, as much a one-woman Off-Broadway presentation with a band as a cabaret show. I recently met with Cion at the Chocolate Room in Brooklyn, and true to form, Cion ordered a vanilla milkshake, laughing at her tendency to swim against the current. We discussed her creative and emotional process for initially creating the Bowie show, and then changing the show on the fly after her beloved Bowie died this past January at 69.

BWW Review: NEW YORK CITY BALLET Shows 21st Century Choreographers
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 9, 2016

New York City Ballet, home to George Balanchine's vision of dance in America, is well known for commissioning new work. This devotion to innovation can result in work that runs the gamut from zestful to appalling. Case in point, the '21st Century Choreographers II' program on May 7th, 2016, which presented a hodgepodge of brilliant, ill conceived, entertaining, and 'not suited to house style'.
