Paper Mill Playhouse just announced the cast for its season opener, the premiere of a new Disney stage musical, Newsies. Revolutionary newsie Jack Kelly will be portrayed by Jeremy Jordan of Broadway's West Side Story and Rock of Ages. Tony® Award nominee John Dossett will play newspaper giant Joseph Pulitzer. The show begins performances on Thursday, September 15. The official press opening is scheduled for Sunday, September 25.

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, announces casting for the Chicago premiere of Snapshots, by Stephen Schwartz and David Stern, and Alan Ayckbourn's Season's Greetings. Producers Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter have announced the debut of Sounds of Summer, a musical storytelling celebration by acclaimed composers Todd Almond, Michael Friedman, Josh Schmidt and Kenny Vance. In addition, Glen Berger (SPIDER-MAN Turn Off the Dark) and PigPen Theatre Company will collaborate on an evening of new material and Off-Broadway's The Civilians will present a concert version of the their hit musical, Gone Missing.

Every Tony Needs a Tina! BestofOffBroadway.com has announced the winners of the 2011 Tina Awards, honoring the best Off-Broadway productions and performances of the 2010-2011 season. Nominees were announced on May 12 by Emmy and Drama Critics Circle Award Winner Leslie Jordan on BestofOffBroadway.com. Thousands of Off-Broadway fans cast their votes, which were tallied on June 9th.

New York City Center's 19th Encores! season will open in City Center's newly restored and renovated theater on February 8, 2012 with Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, and will continue with Rodgers and Hammerstein's rarely seen Pipe Dream on March 28¸ followed by Jule Styne and Leo Robin's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes on May 9. For the first time, each musical will play for seven performances.

Caitlin Mathes, mezzo-soprano of Dayville, Connecticut, won the $15,000 First Prize in the finals of the 2011 Lotte Lenya Competition, held on April 16, 2011, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Instead of awarding Second and Third Prizes, judges presented three equal prizes of $8,000 each to Jing Lin, soprano, of Putian, China; Emma Sewell, soprano, of London, England; and Jacob Lewis Smith, bass/baritone, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

By special arrangement with Daryl Roth and adapted for the stage by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), A Time to Kill brings the heat of the Deep South to Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Directed by Ethan McSweeny (Broadway's Gore Vidal's 'The Best Man'), A Time to Kill runs May 6-June 19, 2011 in the Kreeger Theater.

Although I'll admit to not being completely familiar with Cole Porter's See America First and George M. Cohan's The Governor's Son, it's quite possible that Frank Loesser's score for Where's Charley? could be considered the finest Broadway debut for a composer/lyricist who would eventually occupy a place on musical theatre's top tier.
