BWW Blog: Tara Folio - Giulia Dunes's Balancing Act
by Guest Blogger: Tara Folio - Jul 8, 2016

At the beginning of the summer, I thought that moving from Atlanta to New Hampshire was a huge feat, but my 'journey' is chump change compared to the distance Giulia Dunes has traveled in order to be at Interlakes this summer. Giulia Dunes is a native of Holland, who is quickly learning how to become a native New Yorker. This summer she is taking on the huge task of Assistant Directing a show that she is performing in, while simultaneously rehearsing for her lead role in the next show of the season. Did you follow that? Me neither. Let me break it down. Giulia is performing as 'Missy' in 9 to 5 while rehearsing for her role as 'Ulla' in The Producers. The constant character switch is enough to give anyone an identity crisis, and on top of that, English is not Giulia's first language. I had to sit down and talk to her to find out how she handles all of this insanity and chaos with such grace.

The Young Players to Stage THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, JR., 7/7-10
by Tyler Peterson - Jun 24, 2016

The Young Players will present Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr., July 7-10, at the Royal Theatre in historic Downtown Benton.  The show is directed by D. Brent Miller with music direction by Jo Murry and choreography by Jenny Johnston.  Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie JR., is a clever adaptation of the six-time-Tony-Award-winning Best Musical and the Academy Award-winning film. Thoroughly Modern Millie JR., is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston!  It's 1922 in New York City, and a young Millie Dillmount has just moved to the Big Apple in search of a new life.  Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. Millie's wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage, and the man she actually falls in love with doesn't have a dime to his name - or so he tells her.  What's a small town girl to do?

STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 6/20/16- THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE

Today in 2004, Thoroughly Modern Millie closed at the Marquis Theatre, where it ran for 903 performances. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan. Based on the 1967 film of the same name, it tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love - a thoroughly modern aim in 1922, when women were just entering the workforce. The production subsequently won six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for Sutton Foster.

BWW Review: Eugene O'Neill's THE HAIRY APE Addresses Social and Class Inequities Still in Place Today
by Shari Barrett - Jun 10, 2016

THE HAIRY APE at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble through July 17 tells the story of Robert 'Yank' Smith, a brutish ship laborer who searches for a sense of belonging in a world controlled by the wealthy elite who he believes only see him as a dirty and hairy ape rather than a real human being. As head coal stoker on an ocean liner, Yank (Haile D'Alan whose incredible and extremely physical performance lifts the entire production to the highest artistic quality) is in his element where he rules his dark, hot, hard-drinking smoky world while managing a group of six other coal stokers who seem to prove their resemblance to simians no matter what they do thanks to the brilliant and totally physical ape-like choreography of their every move by director Steven Berkoff. It's truly a wonder as to how the ensemble manages to keep their energy at such a high level throughout the entire show.

BWW Review: BUGLISI DANCE THEATRE Celebrates Women of Distinction
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 9, 2016

Like sand through the hourglass, so is the choreography of Jacqulyn Buglisi. No one can argue that Ms. Buglisi knows how to craft beautifully lush movement. Her dances are ephemeral yet timeless, like a conjured dream held in stasis. But in the wrong hands, this ravishing quality becomes smothering. Luckily Ms. Buglisi formed her original company with Terese Capucilli, Christine Dakin, and Donlin Foreman. At the time they were filling a void left in the wake of Martha Graham's death. More than this, they were four of the most talented dancers on the planet coming into their own as creators while using their own incomparable bodies as tools of deliverance; how could the results be anything less than spectacular? Though one wonders, was it the work or the performers? We found out on June 7th, 2016 at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre during the gala performance of Buglisi Dance Theatre's 23rd Season.
