South Coast Repertory kicks off the 2009-10 Season with Putting It Together, a compilation of Stephen Sondheim songs, that the composer put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, creating a narrative set at a cocktail party in an elegant Manhattan condo. The non-traditional musical, led by Broadway and television star Harry Groener, has a cast of five (a glamorous but slightly jaded couple, a starry-eyed younger couple and a savvy observer) who sing more than 30 songs that reflect their lives, lifestyles and moods of the moment. Some of the songs will be familiar, some less so, a few were even cut from their original musical scores, but they are all sophisticated, smart and drop-dead droll. All, in other words, Sondheim.

The Fall theatre season in the DC area is in full bloom. As the leaves are turning, there is a colorful group of shows opening this month. There are so many, so where do I begin? Here are shows that I am looking forward to seeing, and remember I am a musical theatre lover who likes to sprinkle in a play or two - here and there - so don't get mad if I don't choose one of the plays you are looking forward to seeing. Silver-screen wit collides with behind-the-scenes lunacy in Once in a Lifetime, George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's classic screwball spoof of Hollywood. Edward Asner and Jonathan Silverman head the cast when L.A. Theatre Works records five performances for radio broadcast, directed by the co-author's multiple award-winning son, Christopher Hart, at the Skirball Cultural Center October 21- 25. L.A. Producer Jeffrey Finn announced today additional panelists for the TAKE A SIDE: THE OLEANNA TALK-BACK SERIES, the special post-show series for audiences during previews of the first-ever Broadway production of OLEANNA, the provocative drama by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles.

Talk Like Singing, a groundbreaking production and the first-ever original Japanese musical to have its premiere in the U.S., will have its world premiere in New York City on November 13, 2009 at 8:00 P.M. at New York University's Skirball Center. The show will run through November 22. The talented Koki Mitani has written and directs this comedic new material spoken in both Japanese and English. Musician, composer, DJ and founding member of Pizzicato Five, Yasuharu Konishi has created the music for this production. Japanese superstar Shingo Katori will make his international stage debut alongside cast members Jay Kabira, Keiko Horiuchi, and Shinya Niiro.

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) announced complete casting today for the world premiere of IDIOT SAVANT, written and directed by Richard Foreman. Presented in association with Ontological-Hysteric Theater, IDIOT SAVANT will begin previews Tuesday, October 27 and continue through Sunday, December 13 with an official press opening on Wednesday, November 4 at 8 p.m. Single tickets go on sale on Tuesday, September 15.
