The Guthrie Theater (Joseph Haj, artistic director) announced it has partnered with the Medtronic Foundation to host a one-night-only fundraising event to support hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

She Loves Me is currently running at Village Players of Birmingham to close out their 95thseason. The romantic musical comedy with book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock will play for two more weekends - ending May 20th. The Tony award-winning show premiered on Broadway in 1963 and has had award-winning revivals in 1993, 2000, and 2016. BroadwayWorld Detroit had a quick chance to speak with one of the performers of Village Players' production, Joshua Whitson, about his role and how he feels about She Loves Me - "a classic tale that will keep the audience laughing and smiling throughout!"

Trinity Rep closes out its 2017-18 Season with the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime, which was written by Terrence McNally (book), Stephen Flaherty (music), and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics). Under the direction of Artistic Director Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep's production examines how the musical, which is set in 1906, reflects the country's current political and social climate. Based on the celebrated 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow, the musical tackles race, women's rights, immigration, and workers' rights. Ragtime runs April 26 - May 27 in Trinity Rep's Elizabeth and Malcom Chace Theater, with press opening on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $25. The Alliance Theatre is making another stop on the road, this time at the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center where they're presenting a pair of one-act plays, Hospice and Pointing at the Moon, both by celebrated playwright Pearl Cleage.  BroadwayWorld caught up with Pearl Cleage to talk about her work.

Trinity Repertory Company is delighted to announce Rhode Island Latino Arts's (RILA) executive director Marta V. Martinez has been invited to join the theater as an Artist-in-Residence. As an Artist-in-Residence, Martinez will advise Trinity Rep as they develop theater-based programs by and for the Latinx people of Rhode Island. Martinez will also study how Trinity Rep produces their plays, develops new work, and structures their theater education programs for young people, in the hopes of creating an independent bilingual theater company.

If ever there was a time to challenge the ugly face of male chauvinism, it is now. Lets be honest, dating is rough these days. Courting in 2017 is far more complicated when compared to those in the 1500's. In today world, a line of cleverly arranged emoji's has replaced a heartfelt, handwritten sonnet composed on rose scented parchment paper. The thrilling anticipation once found from seeing a suitors initials imprinted over a wax seal is now applied to receiving a text message of 'WYD?' Complexities found in matching personalities are still a difficult factor in any relationship. William Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' is one of the notable vintage comedy tropes about the fella trying to get the girl. But like wine, some comedy flavor becomes bitter with time. The core of 'The Taming of the Shrew' holds a tone of accepted abuse and manipulation of women. The comedy structure of an arrogant wealthy man psychologically berating a woman into submission was in the past seen as a blueprint of male behavior. Thankfully, now it is viewed as a reminder of chauvinistic dynamics in society that must be challenged.

Theatres have a way of becoming an artist's second home. It doesn't matter if you are a director, designer, actor, or volunteer the countless hours you invest and the close proximity in which you do your work often create friendships that last a lifetime. And each time you step back through those doors you feel like you're coming home. No one knows this to be true more than Joseph Leo Bwarie, whose current home away from home is the Garry Marshall Theatre in Toluca Lake. Bwarie has been connected with the theatre (known formerly as The Falcon) and the Marshall family for many years, and he recently stepped into a co-artistic directorship of the newly-rechristened theatre, along with another longtime Marshall associate, Dimitri Toscas.

Brown University and Trinity Rep announce a change of leadership of their Masters of Fine Arts Programs in Acting and Directing. Earlier this month, Trinity Rep acting company member and Brown/Trinity Rep faculty member Angela Brazil assumed the role of Director of Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs in Acting and Directing. Trinity Rep associate director and former Brown/Trinity Rep Head of Directing Brian Mertes assumed the role of Director of Graduate Studies for the MFA Programs in Acting and Directing. Trinity Rep acting company member and former Director of Brown/Trinity Rep MFA Programs Stephen Berenson will continue to serve the school as the Founding Director of the programs.
