LIFT 2014 presents After A War, 24 - 29 June 2014 at Southbank Centre and Battersea Arts Centre. The artistic response to war can be poetic, profound, harsh - and sometimes even surprisingly playful; a reaction to both the war itself and the long shadow it casts many years after the event.

Long Beach Opera's offbeat double bill provides two iconic American takes on Igor Stravinsky's whimsical, neoclassical theater piece L'Histoire du Soldat. Composed in 1918, Stravinsky's original score was set to Ferdinand Ramuz's version of a Russian folktale about a soldier in pursuit of a princess and a treasure who is conned by the Devil.

The Missionary Society of St. Columban commonly known as the 'Columban Fathers' is a missionary Catholic society of apostolic life founded in Ireland in 1916 and approved by the Vatican in 1918. For much of the 20th century, Carl Sandburg (1/6/1878 - 7/22/1967) was synonymous with the American experience, a spokesman on behalf of "the people." One of the most successful writers in the English language, Sandburg was a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner for his poetry (Cornhuskers, 1918 and Complete Poems, 1950) and part of his six-volume Lincoln biography (Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, 1939). He was also a groundbreaking journalist, folk song collector, children's storyteller, political organizer/activist, novelist, autobiographer, and captivating performer. Yet, after his death, Sandburg's literary legacy faded and his poems, once taught in schools across America, were dismissed under the weight of massive critical attack. The new 90-minute documentary American Masters The Day Carl Sandburg Died, premiering nationally Monday, September 24 at 10 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings) to commemorate the 45th anniversary of his death, provides a dynamic examination of Sandburg's life, work and controversial legacy from a modern perspective. The film will be available on DVD September 25 through PBS Distribution.

Today REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts and culture, announces its Fall 2012 events and previews major projects scheduled for early 2013. SALOMANIA plays tonight, June 15 through July 22 at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley.
