To welcome the week-long engagement of gender-bending stage icon Taylor Mac's A 24 Decade History of Popular Music at the newly restored landmark Curran Theatre, opening this month, they have enlisted designer Machine Dazzle, creator of Taylor's costumes to create a spectacular visual feast for the eye. How do you take hundreds of kids (ages 7 to 17) and put up over a dozen shows (mostly musicals, plus a few plays) in as little as three weeks, with rehearsals limited to maybe just 12 or 13 days, with all or most of the cast rehearsing just slightly more than two hours each day, and many campers working on multiple shows at once? And I'm talking about completely staged shows with full production values, including sets, lighting, sound, costumes and live orchestras. The typically implausible G&S style plot involves two companies going to extreme lengths to secure good reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe with rival productions. Many of the usual Gilbertian elements are included: an abandoned baby, a sense of duty, love across ranks and an implausible, contrived finale.
