Per usual, The Ensemble Theatre honors Black history every month of the year. Less usual: The theater company commemorates August Wilson and Black American history with its continued staged readings of Wilson's AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE and currently staged production of Wilson's play FENCES.

The Wagner College Theatre has announced that the winner of this year's Stanley Drama Award is Mike Bencivenga of Astoria, Queens, N.Y., for his two-act play, 'Bad Hearts.'

It was circa 1993 when I was introduced to the brilliance of August Wilson by my high school theatre teacher Rodney Sheffield. I remember reading the play in one day, and from then on I was infatuated with Wilson's writing style and dynamic characters. Being a black kid in the theatre, there wasn't much for me to identify with, so Wilson quickly became a theatre icon in my eyes. Fast forward to 2000 and I got to play Cory in my last year of undergrad. My thesis was on the parallels of Wilson's FENCES and Miller's DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Here we are 16 years later and this play has crept up on my radar yet again! I had the pleasure of seeing The Ensemble Theatre's production of FENCES during the month of February and it was a great way to start my celebration of Black History Month.

This monumental, searing masterwork, which earned O'Neill his fourth Pulitzer Prize for Drama, opens at Palm Beach Dramaworks tonight, January 29 and continues through February 28. Please note that all evening performances are at 7:30pm, and all matinees are at 1:00pm.

The new Dolly! will pay tribute to the original work of legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion, which has been hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history. Luigi Creatore, who with his cousin Hugo Peretti wrote and produced iconic hits for such stars as Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Perry Como, Sarah Vaughan, Della Reese, Jimmie Rodgers, Patti Page and many others, including the Tokens' “Lion Sleeps Tonight,” Presley's “Can't Help Falling in Love” and “Wild in the Country,” and Cook's “Another Saturday Night” and “Twistin' the Night Away,” died of pneumonia at a Boca Raton hospice on Sunday, Dec. 13. He was 93.

Following their intial production a few months ago - Beta Blockers, a show composed of vignettes that outlined the triumphs and pitfalls of modern day relationships both with oneself as well as others - Left of Left Center is presenting another show with just as many quirks hoping for another positive response from the community. Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre will continue its 46th season dedicated to Amira Baraka with the world premiere of his final play, The Most Dangerous Man In America (W. E. B. Du Bois).  Performances will begin May 28th, with opening night set for June 11th at the Castillo Theater (543 West 42nd Street). This limited Off-Broadway engagement, directed by Woodie King Jr., will continue through June 28th only.
