Houston, October 31, 2013 -- In January 2014, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) presents the American premiere of The Passenger(1968), a powerful opera exploring the Holocaust by exiled Polish-Jewish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Reinforcing the immense significance of this historic event, HGOco–Houston Grand Opera's community collaboration and education initiative–will present a series of concerts and films throughout the city, focused on remembrance of the past and prominent themes explored in the gripping story of genocide. HGOco partners with the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, Holocaust Museum Houston, and the Asia Society Texas Center to produce several concerts and films, inviting audiences to explore the connection from past to present through music, community conversation, and art.

The editors of Opera News are pleased to announce the honorees for the ninth annual Opera News Awards, paying tribute to five superb artists who have made invaluable contributions to the art form: director Patrice Chéreau, tenor Juan Diego Flórez, mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, bass-baritone James Morris and soprano Nina Stemme. The Opera News Awards ceremonywill take place on Sunday, April 13 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The release comes exactly one week before Fleisher's 85th birthday today, July 23, 2013, and is supported by a full schedule of appearances as pianist, conductor, and mentor, in the coming year.

Julio Botti's ZOHO Music debut, TANGO NOSTALGIAS, introduces a fresh new voice to the nuevo tango movement pioneered decades ago by Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Ziegler, Piazzolla's longtime pianist and a prolific composer and producer in his own right. For this coming out party for the young Argentinian saxophonist, an instrument not normally associated with tango music, Ziegler has re-arranged some of his most potent compositions specifically with Botti's soaring soprano horn in mind.

The 39th season of the Hangar Theatre includes a thrilling line-up of plays and musicals including a favorite farce, a Tony-winning musical, and two regional premieres and features an array of exciting Broadway talent.
