John Grade's VIEW FROM UP HERE On Display at the Anchorage Museum, Thru 10/2

In View From Up Here, the new exhibition at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska, conceptual artist John Grade explores sculptural forms based on Japanese fishing floats. For the past century, floats made of thick, hand-blown glass have traveled to the Arctic coast from Asian waters, buoyed by harsh, ocean currents. They can get trapped in sea ice for decades, ultimately washing up on The Alaskan shoreline -- often in pristine condition. Grade created his own versions of blown glass forms, many of which are encased in a wood exoskeleton inspired by other organic, ocean bound elements.   (more...)

Sally Mahieu Releases ALASKA FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Sally Mahieu was born and raised in Southwest Michigan. She is the eldest of three children, one of whom is the subject of this book. After attending Western Michigan University, she received a writing degree from Famous Writers School in Westport, Connecticut. She has written for local, regional, and national publications. Sally is a former freelance writer for the Kalamazoo Gazette. She is married to her husband, Edward. Sally has two adult children, two adult grandsons, and two beautiful great-granddaughters. She's still deeply rooted in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and lives in the house that her great-great-grandfather built in 1896, and has completed her new book 'Alaska From the Inside Out- Memories of Suzanne Nuyen Henning': a fun-to-read novel filled with the joys and pains experienced in an exceptional life.
