As the Christmas holidays approach, local theaters are gearing up to present the classic seasonal plays and musicals: Miracle on 34th St., White Christmas, and of course A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, etc., etc. But if you've seen enough of these (or the Grinch, or The Gift of the Magi) you may want to attend the ADOBE Theater in December for 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,' for something different.

I hardly know where to begin with this review of the Bohemian Theatre Ensemble's gutsy, stripped-down and yet somehow epic production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Terrence McNally that is running at Theatre Wit through June 30, 2013. There, I guess I just began. I'm a jumble of thoughts and feeling right now. Come to think of it, so are the three principal characters.

This Friday, May 31, WCT's Cabaret returns to the Westport Woman's Club. Actors who have appeared in comedies, dramas, mysteries, and musicals on our stage will turn into crooners, swing singers, and stand-up comics as May tips into June. The irrepressibleRob Watts will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening; Rich Mancini & Joan Barere, Fred Tisch, and Linda Gilmore will recreate the routines of classic American comedians of yesteryear, all of whom honed their craft on the Borscht Belt in the heyday of those Catskills resorts. And you'll be tempted to hum along, or dream along, to the melodies of such great songs as "I've Got You Under My Skin," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "The Man That Got Away," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Ain't Misbehavin'," and more. Ryan Hendrickson, Priscilla Squiers, Lisa Dahlstrom, Chris Wilkes, Ruth Anne Baumgartner, Stephen DiRocco, Kim Lowden, Randye Kaye, Donna Wyant-how's that for a musical lineup?

Despite having a cast of incredible triple threats, overall, FLASHDANCE: THE MUSICAL---the new, Broadway-bound stage musical based on the popular 80's-era movie of the same name---seems like a well-meant endeavor that needs a serious overhaul in its disjointed execution. The national tour company continues its Costa Mesa stop at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through May 19.
