Infinitheatre presents the remount of its hugely successful world premiere of Kafka's Ape, Guy Sprung's adaptation of Franz Kafka's A Report to an Academy, from the original German. Kafka's Ape runs from Nov. 7-24 at Bain St. Michel.

Live From Lincoln Center will ring in the new year with a special broadcast of the New York Philharmonic's Opening Gala concert from Avery Fisher Hall featuring Music Director Alan Gilbert and special guest cello soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The Opening Gala concert, to be taped on September 25, will feature dance-inspired orchestral works, including Azul by Osvaldo Golijov, a cello concert written for Ma; the world premiere of an arrangement of Astor Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel by Octavio Brunetti, commissioned by the New York Phliharmonic; and two classics by Maurice Ravel,Alborada del gracioso and Bolero. La rondine was commissioned by the Karltheater, Vienna in 1913, but its 1917 premiere was moved to neutral Monte Carlo after the outbreak of World War I. Although an initial success, La rondine was denounced as an 'enemy opera' by the French press and declined in popularity. Only recently has the opera been performed regularly in opera houses worldwide. Nicolas Joël's production draws on the glamour and glitter of 1920s France. In the chic surroundings of her Parisian salon, Magda celebrates passionate love in the memorable song 'Doretta's Dream' and in an Art Nouveau-inspired café, the lovers chat to a leisurely foxtrot. Giacomo Puccini's score is influenced by Viennese operetta and infused with popular dance rhythms, from two interwoven waltz themes in Act II to lively polkas and tangos. The final act moves to a hotel on the French Riviera where the lovers bid a heart-breaking farewell in soaring melodies, before Magda -- the 'swallow' of the title -- flies away.

The Segal Centre for Performing Arts is proud to conclude its record-breaking 2012-2013 theatre season with the world premiere Yiddish musical Tales From Odessa, based on the stories of Isaak Babel, book by Derek Goldman and music & lyrics by Josh 'Socalled' Dolgin. A Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre production directed by Audrey Finkelstein, Tales From Odessa runs in the Segal Theatre from June 16th to July 7th, 2013; in Yiddish with English and French supertitles.

Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch has announced the company's 2013-2014 season. Eight new works enter Houston Ballet's repertoire, including world premieres by James Kudelka, Garrett Smith and Melissa Hough in September 2013; the North American premiere of David Bintley's Aladdin in February 2014; company premieres of Jiri Kylian's Sechs Tanze, Christopher Bruce's Intimate Pages and Stanton Welch's Of Blessed Memory as well as a world premiere A Young Person's Guide to Orchestra by Mr. Welch in March 2014.

The New York Philharmonic's season-finale program, A Dancer's Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky — conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert and starring New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns in a production created by Giants Are Small — will be distributed to cinemas worldwide by SpectiCast beginning September 2013. Nylon Fusion Theatre Company presents two world-premiere one-act works by Don Nigro Marina and Mata Hari, at Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, about two women who bravely faced personal battles as they were caught up in the turmoil of the two world wars. Directed by Ivette Dumeng, and starring Tatyana Kot in the title roles, with Curtis James Nielsen, Marina and Mata Hari will be performed together at the Robert Moss Theatre at 440 Lafayette Street beginning tomorrow, June 15th.

I recently attended a performance of La Bayadere. The dancing was excellent, but the music by Ludwig Minkus was excruciating. I realize that it has a jump, a bounce, danceable adagio notes, but after three hours of listening to it my head was spinning. I went home intending to wash Minkus out of both my hair and brain by listening to every note that Shostakovich and Prokofiev ever wrote. If I want to hear music, let's not settle for anything less than best and, many times, the brilliant.

From tonight, February 21-March 3, 2013, Houston Ballet presents Stanton Welch's La Bayadere ('The Temple Dancer'), a historic classic staged by Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch and set in royal India of the past.
