The Oregon Shakespeare Festival opened Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, directed by OSF Artistic Director Bill Rauch, on April 22 in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. Preview performances were April 18, 20 and 21, and the musical runs through Oct. 27.

Before the opening night performance a representative of Actors' Equity presented the theatre with a proclamation in honor of their 50thanniversary which included praise for not only Porthouse and Kent State University, but for Terri Kent, who has been leading the endeavor for 18 successful years. St. Ann's Warehouse today reveal the cast and creative team for the Bard SummerScape production of Daniel Fish's reimagining of Rodgers and Hammerstein's landmark 1943 musical Oklahoma!, which kicks off the seasonon September 27, having first been staged by Bard's Fisher Center in 2015.

This is not shaping up to be a good year for Oscar Hammerstein II, American musical theatre's most important writer, who spent the first half of the 20th Century not only making significant strides to convert the genre from loosely assembled entertainments into respected and influential pieces of dramatic art, but was also a leading voice in promoting progressive values through his books and lyrics for such musicals as SHOW BOAT, SOUTH PACIFIC and THE KING AND I.

'There is something so simple, so wholesome about the story and the characters. When Curly made his entrance on opening night at the St. James Theatre in 1943 and sang 'Oh, what a beautiful morning,' the whole audience took a huge sigh of relief. There in the midst of war was a breath of optimism and that beautiful music.' And, indeed, when the speaker, actor Stephen Mark Lukas makes the same entrance seventy-five years later on the stage of the Ogunquit Playhouse in the company's new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic Oklahoma, the entire audience reacts in exactly same way. With a smile as expansive as the territory and a voice as luminous as the bright morning about which he sings, Lukas establishes immediate affection and rapport for the character of Curly, as does his co-star, the lovely, radiant Taylor Quick.

Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is pleased to announce it has received a $10,000 grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation and its Community Grant program. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's first musical, Oklahoma!, opened on Broadway on March 31, 1943, and will mark its 75th anniversary this spring. That show, along with Carousel (whose new Broadway revival opens on April 12), South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music firmly established Rodgers and Hammerstein at the apex of the great age of the American Songbook.

The Broadway cast of Jimmy Buffett's 'Escape to Margaritaville' added their own flavor to Rodgers & Hammerstein, celebrating the 75th Anniversary of 'Oklahoma!' with a very Buffett version of 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top,' complete with an appearance by Jimmy Buffett himself.
