The New York Public Library of the Performing Arts has acquired the archive of Martha Graham, one of the most significant and influential voices of the modern dance movement.

Pearl Primus (also known as Omowale) was a pioneer of modern dance, dance as protest, and African dance in the United States. She was also cited as an inspiration by acclaimed artists such as Camille Brown, Ntozake Shange, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar; a teacher of Judith Jamison and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; a student of Martha Graham; friend of Paul Robeson; and a woman with a degree in medicine. Her medical career was thwarted by racism so she funneled her gifts to the world through the filter of dance instead.

Celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment granting U.S. women the right to vote, Martha Graham Dance Company's The EVE Project comes to Northrop on Sat, Apr 4 with a repertory of Martha Graham works featuring female protagonists as well as pieces by some of today's most important female choreographers.

The world-renowned Martha Graham Dance Company presents the second season of The EVE Projecta?"a program celebrating female empowerment and the centennial of the 19th Amendment this year. The world-renowned Martha Graham Dance Company returns to The Joyce Theater April 2–14, 2019 with The EVE Project, the Company's season theme celebrating female empowerment and the upcoming 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The season focuses on both historical and contemporary ideas of the feminine. Commissioned works from five of today's top choreographers will be presented, and the classic repertory features Martha Graham's heroines and anti-heroines—all with an underlying statement about female power.

Nimbus brings world premieres and acclaimed repertory to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM Fisher) and South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) this spring, along with performances at The Putney School (Vermont) and in its hometown of Jersey City.

Spring activities for the Centennial, which continues through all of 2019, include a wide range of performances, film screenings, discussions, education initiatives, community programming, and new works by other artists in conversation with Merce Cunningham's work.

The January GrahamDeconstructed focuses on the extraordinary partnership between Martha Graham and sculptor-designer Isamu Noguchi and two of their collaborations, Herodiade (1944) and El Penitente (1940). The evening will include a rehearsal run-through of both works introduced by a conversation about the Graham/Noguchi collaboration. Following the presentation, the audience will have a chance to explore and photograph the Noguchi set pieces/sculptures.

As part of the Martha Graham Dance Company's popular Studio Series, Graham 2 will perform Martha Graham's beloved masterwork Appalachian Spring (1944). One of Graham's most celebrated works, Appalachian Spring has been called "shining and joyous" and "a testimony to the simple fineness of the human spirit" (The New York Times). The work features Aaron Copland's Pulitzer Prize-winning score and a spare set by Graham's longtime collaborator Isamu Noguchi. Performances are Saturday, December 8, at 1pm (family matinee) with an evening performance at 6pm, and Sunday, December 9, at 2pm. On Saturday evening, the score will be performed live by the International Chamber Orchestra of America directed by Daniel Feng.

Merce Cunningham is widely considered one of the most important choreographers of all time. Throughout his 70-year career, he continued to innovate, helping to drive the evolution of the American avant-garde and expanding the frontiers of contemporary visual and performance arts.

Juilliard Dance, led by acting artistic director Taryn Kaschock Russell, continues its season with Spring Dances, a repertory program featuring Merce Cunningham's Sounddance, set to Untitled 1975/1994 by David Tudor and staged by Jean Freebury; Crystal Pite's Grace Engine, set to music by Owen Belton and staged by Alexandra Damiani; and Twyla Tharp's Deuce Coupe, set to music by the Beach Boys and staged by Richard Colton.

The Deborah Zall Project will present a program of works by legendary modern dance choreographers Jane Dudley, Sophie Maslow and Anna Sokolow, along with dances by Deborah Zall, May 12 & 13 at 8 PM at the Martha Graham Studio Theater, 55 Bethune St.   Zall has gathered an ensemble of artists, all former members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, to perform these timeless works that have been reconstructed by Abigail Blatt, Lynn Frielinghaus, Samantha Geracht, Martin Lofsnes, and Zall.

Creatively, they are the inspiration for choreographer Christopher Stuart's most recent work, 7 Deadly Sins featuring music by the Nashville-based collective known as Ten Out of Tenn, and now brought to life by Nashville Ballet in a twin-bill that closes out the company's 2016-17 season on a resounding note of artistic achievement.

Directed by Kristy Chambrelli with music direction by Joseph Hodge, THE TENDER LAND tells the story of a young girl, who finds herself on the cusp of adulthood and must choose whether to remain in her small town or experience what the world has to offer.
