The Recording Academy announced its 2017 Special Merit Awards recipients today. The Lifetime Achievement Award honorees are Shirley Caesar, Ahmad Jamal, Charley Pride, Jimmie Rodgers, Nina Simone, Sly Stone, and the Velvet Underground. Thom Bell, Mo Ostin and Ralph Peer are Trustees Award honorees; Alan Dower Blumlein is the Technical GRAMMY Award recipient.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced today the annual selection of 25 motion pictures that have been inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress because of their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance.

Fans of horror and magical realism are in for a rare treat, as California East University Press will be publishing novelist Cole Alpaugh's latest work, Walking to Candy Land, which is set to hit bookstores and online outlets on January 1. It was during my undergrad years at Sam Houston State University that I was introduced to the writings of Edward Albee. Every so often there's a playwright that comes along and changes the landscape of the American Theatre. It was in 1963 when WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? debuted on Broadway and shook the foundation of the theatre world. Albee's work delves into the human psyche with an in-depth view of relationships, marriage, and sex. His presence will be truly missed but his mark on the theatre world is undoubtedly immortal.

Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl will join Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic for the 2016-17 season Opening Gala Concert, performing Gershwin's Concerto in F in his New York Philharmonic debut, Today, September 21, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. The concert launches the New York Philharmonic's 175th anniversary season and Music Director Alan Gilbert's farewell season with a program honoring the Philharmonic's legacy of premiering important works, particularly music connected to New York City.
