Billy Elliot the winner of 10 Tony Awards in 2009 has made its way to the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha. Knowing very little about this show, I was hesitant as to what I might think about it. I knew the general story behind the show and I knew that it had won several Tony Awards while on Broadway, I even lived in New York City the majority of its Broadway run, but never did I have any desire to see it. Boy was I wrong! Now that I have seen this wonderful show I am kicking myself for not having given it the chance in New York but at the same time I am happy to say that I can now check it off my list and I will forever remember this phenomenal cast and their performance.

There may have been 40 cabaret performers strutting their stuff this past week at the 23rd New York Cabaret Convention at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center, but the true star of the three-night extravaganza (October 17-19) was the late Donald Smith, the cabaret impresario and guru to the genre's luminaries, who died this past March at 79. Sponsored by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, which Smith founded in 1985, this year's Convention featured numerous homages to Smith from the performers, many of whom had their career's supported and advanced with the help of the colorful and beloved cabaret producer and promoter. Early in Wednesday's Gala Opening Night show, the 'first lady of the American keyboard' Barbara Carroll called her friend Donald Smith 'the quintessential New Yorker,' and when Mark Nadler closed night one with George and Ira Gershwin's 'Our Love Is Here to Stay,' he said, 'Everybody who cares about the myths of these songs are in this room tonight.' Well, it was clear that anyone who cared about Donald Smith was at the Rose Theater for at least one of the three shows.

Rubicon Theatre Artistic Directors KARYL LYNN BURNS and JAMES O'NEIL announced the company's 15th Anniversary Season at a preview event for subscribers, donors and media last earlier this month at the theatre's home in Ventura's Downtown Cultural District. The event was hosted by Rubicon Board President DR. ROZ WARNER and Board of Advisors' Chair/Board Vice-President JEFF SMITH, with onstage appearances by several of the directors, writers and performers for the season.

Roundabout Theatre Company's (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) Broadway production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood begins previews tonight, Friday, October 19th at 8:00PM. The Mystery of Edwin Drood stars Stephanie J. Block, Will Chase, Gregg Edelman, Jim Norton, and Chita Rivera with Andy Karl, Jessie Mueller, Betsy Wolfe, Nicholas Barasch, Peter Benson, and Robert Creighton. My distant cousin Walter Elias 'Walt' Disney had a knack for turning everything into perfection, or at least practically perfect in every way. He took the mean, cranky nanny from P.L. Travers' book "Mary Poppins" and turned her into a saint. He excised two of the four Banks children, allowing the cutest ones to remain in the story. Travers' nanny couldn't dance on rooftops, didn't have adventures with Bert, didn't win at the horse races and couldn't sing. Travers was Australian; they take pride in being able to endure aggressive crocodiles, harsh deserts and appalling alloparenting. For those of us in the northern hemisphere who prefer our protagonists to be a bit on the spoonful of sugar side, Disney's Mary Poppins is just the ticket.

Fox Valley Rep, in residence at Pheasant Run Resort, announces their calendar-year 2013 season of nostalgic musicals and award-winning comedies, including Joe DiPietro's comedy thriller, The Art of Murder, to the heavenly hit musical, Forever Plaid, followed by a rocking '60s musical about love and marriage, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?, then to a rollicking song-and-dance revue of America's beloved Cole Porter, Let's Misbehave!, to a touching no-place-like-home holiday family comedy, Making God Laugh.

'For Pete's Sake,' a six-actor seriocomedy by Joe Capozzi, allows you to laugh with a man who grasps at dark humor to ease the pain of deep secrets. It will now be given a full production tonight, September 27 to October 14 at the Fourth Street Theater (in NY Theatre Workshop) by Starr Films and Snowball's Chance Productions. World renowned conductor and arranger John Wilson leads an all-star cast of singers and his Grammy Award-nominated eponymous orchestra, comprised of some of the UK's finest musicians, on this dazzling recording of some of the greatest songs from Hollywood's Golden Age. Most of the scores have been lovingly and painstakingly reconstructed by Wilson, as MGM destroyed the originals in 1969.

Roundabout Theatre Company announced the full cast this July for the new Broadway production of Rupert Holmes' Tony Award-winning musical comedy The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
