Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities

This evening, the 2023 Helen Hayes Awards took place at The Anthem on the District Wharf, with over 1,600 theatre-makers and theatre supporters in attendance. Esteemed Washington theatre artists Naomi Jacobson, Erika Rose, Holly Twyford, and Christopher Michael Richardson hosted an evening showcasing the vibrant and diverse community of professional theatre artists in the Washington region.

Nominations have been announced for the 37th Helen Hayes Awards, which will be presented on Monday, May 22. Nominees include productions from Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, GALA Hispanic Theatre and more.

'Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities' is an intense, but fascinating portrait of community and identity, with a powerhouse creative team on and off the stage.

Beginning on June 9, and running through July 3, 2022, Theater J brings Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities to the stage. The groundbreaking documentary play was conceived, written, and originally performed by Anna Deavere Smith in the wake of the violence and unrest that struck the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, in 1991.

Next up for First Stage's Young Company, the Theater Academy's award-winning training program for advanced high school actors, will be MACBETH, Shakespeare's darkest tragedy, infamously known as the cursed Scottish play.

Written by Anna Deavere Smith (Notes From the Field) and directed by Nicole Brewer (Milk Like Sugar), Fires In The Mirror begins performances on Tuesday, January 18th for a limited run through Sunday, February 6, 2022.

Fires in the Mirror is Anna Deavere Smith's now-classic theatre piece about the Crown Heights, Brooklyn disturbances of 1991, the singular point of which is that it's impossible to know exactly what to think about those events either.

The Department of Theater and Dance presents Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities, a groundbreaking historical recount of the 1991 Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn, written by Anna Deavere Smith and directed by Risa Brainin. The show opens at 7 p.m. on February 26 on Zoom and runs through the 28th.
