Washington National Opera (WNO) presents the world premiere of An American Soldier, June 13-14, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. An American Soldier features music by composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. This new work, to be performed in English, is the second hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's commissioning program for contemporary American opera. An American Soldier is directed by David Paul and a chamber orchestra is conducted by Steven Jarvi; both are alumni of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.

The musical excerpts will be followed by an artist Q&A moderated by WQXR's Terrance McKnight. Award-winning theatre, opera, and film director Julie Taymor will be honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum on June 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The award, which honors women who have broken gender barriers to make remarkable contributions in their fields, will be bestowed on Taymor, winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 1998. It will be presented by Museum Trustee Elizabeth A. Sackler and followed by a conversation between Taymor and feminist icon Gloria Steinem.
