Bernstein's Philharmonic Celebrates Centennial Festival, 10/25–11/14

The New York Philharmonic will present Bernstein's Philharmonic: A Centennial Festival, October 25-November 14, 2017,celebrating the former Philharmonic Music Director and Laureate Conductor on the centennial of his birth. The festival - which is part of the worldwide salute to the legacy of the renowned composer, conductor, pianist, and educator - will center on Bernstein's symphonic cycle, conducted by Alan Gilbert and Leonard Slatkin, complemented by other Bernstein works as well as by music by composers he admired and championed. In addition, the Philharmonic will present a Young People's Concert - the series that Bernstein famously brought to national attention through the television broadcasts - titled Inspirations and Tributes: "Celebrating Leonard Bernstein," conducted by Leonard Slatkin and featuring pianist Makoto Ozone on November 11. A number of other events - ranging from a marathon of Bernstein's Mahler recordings to a partnership with Harvard and University of Michigan to explore Bernstein as an educator and conductor - complement the concerts throughout the centennial season. Bernstein served as the Philharmonic's Music Director from 1958 to 1969, when he was named Laureate Conductor, a title he held until his death in 1990.

The musical-book by Enda Walsh; music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova-is based on John Carney's Academy Award-winning indie film of the same name. Uncle Floyd Brings Old-Fashioned Laughs to UCPAC with His Traveling Burlesque Show

On April 8 at 8 PM, a performance will come to the Union County Performing Arts Center that embodies the vaudeville spirit the historic theater was founded on in 1928. Uncle Floyd's Last Authentic Traveling Burlesque Show, led by television and radio personality Uncle Floyd, is a nostalgic variety show featuring comedians, a live band and of course, burlesque performers. Within the two hour performance, there will be songs, dances, laughs and strip-tease in the spirit of the time honored art form.

Martin E. Segal Theatre Center to Present THE LEGACY OF JUDITH MELINA AND JULIAN BECK WITH THE LIVING THEATRE 11/7

Join us for an evening celebrating the life and work of the late Judith Malina (June 4, 1926 - April 10, 2015), who was a regular participant and guest at many Segal Center evenings. Malina was a German-born American theatre and film actress, writer and director. In 1945, she became the student of the radical German political theatre director Erwin Piscator at The New School in New York. In 1947, with her husband and artistic partner Julian Beck (May 31, 1925 - September 14, 1985), Malina co-founded the highly influential The Living Theatre, a radical political theatre troupe that rose to prominence in New York City and Paris during the 1950s and 60s. Together they created legendary productions (The Brig, The Connection, Paradise Now, Antigone, Mysteries and Smaller Pieces, Frankenstein) until Beck's death.
