The much-anticipated Manila premiere of Broadway's longest-running American musical, CHICAGO, razzle-dazzled audiences with its hard-hitting numbers (All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle), which speak of passion, treachery, murder, and glossed-over celebrity, on opening night. Leading the pack of an all-American cast of Broadway veterans is Bianca Marroquin who rocked Solaire Resort and Casino's The Theatre with her multi-faceted portrayal of accused murderess Roxie Hart. The strong ensemble, while writhing, gyrating, and exploding to John Kander's music, provided the backdrop to Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's dark satirical commentary of the 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. When the audience rose to a standing ovation at the end of the show, it was palpable that even in these modern days, it is impossible to convict good looking murderesses.

This coming week at the Rooftop Films Summer Series features nights of artistic and emotional intrigue. On Friday the 13th, we will show Oskar Alegria's poetic documentary THE SEARCH FOR EMAK BAKIA, in which he re-traces the steps of renowned surrealist artist and filmmaker Man Ray. Music for the night is from Upstate guitarist Alexander Turnquist, whose mellow yet intricate melodies will have you swayin' in the summer breeze. We'll be down in Gowanus at The Old American Can Factory, so come through and catch a glimpse of the Kentile Floors sign before its rumored demise. Filmmaker Osark Alegria will be with us all the way from Spain for a chat after the film and the general cavorting and merriment that famously follow our shows.
The next night, Saturday the 14th, we'll be back at Industry City in Sunset Park for a program of romantic shorts called LOVE HURTS. These shorts are all about the power of love, in all its beautiful, messy, destructive glory. Both live-action and animated shorts from across the world will blow your mind while tugging your heartstrings. We're also excited to bring Brent Hoff's Emotional Arcade to the Rooftop experience. The Emotional Arcade is an interactive installation where participants engage in competitive games using their emotions.
