Palm Canyon Theatre's SPRING AWAKENING is Inventive, Exciting, and Delightful
by Stan Jenson - Jul 6, 2019

It's a shame that our lack of summer population will limit the houses at Palm Canyon Theatre's current production of Spring Awakening because it is one of the most inventive and exciting musicals to be presented this season. The story of adolescents in late 19th century Germany discovering and dealing with their blossoming sexuality is combined with folk music and some very angry rock to deliver a still-relevant story.

BWW Review: SPRING AWAKENING at Teater Prisma
by Annette Stolt - Oct 5, 2018

In 2016, West End Stockholm was founded by Thomas Cruetz, Mikael Hansson and Bengt Kampe. and a couple of musicals has been played so far. The name West End Stockholm is genius, as it is located as far west you can go by the subway in Stockholm. What else should you name a production company and in a western suburb in Stockholm.

BWW Review: Riveting SPRING AWAKENING IS at Eight 'O Clock Theatre
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Jul 13, 2018

Young people wanting answers and adults refusing to give them is the theme of Eight 'O Clock Theatre's newest production July 13-22, a dark coming of age tale, Spring Awakening. Written in 1891 with modern folk-rock music and lyrics applied by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater in 2006, Spring Awakening is a story of friends growing up in Germany, girls and boys discovering their sexuality with no one willing to guide them. The musical covers topics like abuse, homosexuality, masturbation, sadomasochism, suicide, and abortion. It frankly explores what happens when parents are too prudish to discuss the hormonal urges that come with impending adulthood.

BWW Review: Effortful SPRING AWAKENING at 12th Ave Arts Suffers From Technical Difficulties
by Amelia Reynolds - Jul 27, 2016

'Spring Awakening' is a tough musical to take on: all of the performers need to be exceptional singers and dancers, while also finding that sweet spot of giving their character emotional honesty in its darkly funny narrative. On top of it all, most of the actors have to be (or at least pass as) middle schoolers. Any misssteps-especially when adapted for a small stage-are painfully apparent, even when the production has a lot to offer. Basement Theatrics' production of 'Spring Awakening' suffers from these very misfortunes, and despite the show having a number of impressive vocal performances and cool, abstract choreographic choices, the technical and pacing issues made the show feel a hair out of its league.

BWW Reviews: Stage Door Inc.'s SPRING AWAKENING Brings on the Angst and Emotional Turmoil of Suppressed Adolescent Youth
by Nyderah Williams - Sep 16, 2014

Following a group of kids growing up in a pious community in late-19th-century Germany, SPRING AWAKENING explores the lust and confusion of the adolescents discovering their budding sexuality while being repressed by their parents and teachers. Wendla's mother is too inhibited to give her daughter an ounce of sex education. Moritz (Miguel Guzman) believes the erotic dreams that plague him are a sure sign of insanity. Melchior (Colton Wright), having learned about sex through books, tries to inform his friends about what they feel and is convinced that the suppression of desire is a conspiracy among the adults to keep the teens unhappy and complacent.

REVIEW: SPRING AWAKENING Rocks the Body and Stirs the Soul at OCPAC
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 20, 2009

It's tough to be a teenager these days. And apparently, things weren't so easy back in late 19th Century Germany either. In what is possibly one of the most soul-stirring, beautifully-scored, creatively innovative musicals to have come out of Broadway in the past few years, SPRING AWAKENING (playing through November 29 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center) is an accessible period piece with the heart of a modern day teen drama (minus the After-School Special treatment). Sandwiched in between scenes of time-defiant angst is a beautiful (and at times, hard-rocking) musical score that is as equally rebellious as it is truthful. There's plenty to like here: from the bare but effective set, to the emotionally-charged performances of its young but impressive cast. With this show, there's a moment you know... you've been rocked.

And the Children Shall Lead: Spring Awakening the Play at Mobtown
by Daniel Collins - Mar 2, 2009

It's never easy being a teenager, no matter what century you live in, but one can guess it was particularly difficult for adolescents in 19th century rural Germany where playwright Frank Wedekind sets his 1891 play, Spring Awakening.
