New York Musical Festival Adds New Productions, Readings & More to 2016 Slate

The New York Musical Festival (NYMF), previously known as The New York Musical Theater Festival, announced today additional productions and special events for NYMF 2016. On August 21 Red Blanket Productions will present a rare revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins at the Pico Playhouse in West LA. Director Dan Fishbach and actor Zachary Lutsky, who plays assassin John Hinckley, recently took time out of their busy schedules to talk about the show. The human condition of gays in contemporary Russia mirrors life in a phantasmagoric insane asylum. That's the view of a new play, 'That Queer Blind Silence' (www.thatqueerblindsilence.com) by emigre playwright Sophia Romma. Her political farce, written in English but in the style of Russian Expressionism, depicts the ordeals of a fictional figure skater whose character was inspired partly by the life and career of bronze medalist Johnny Weir. Underground International Voices of Theatre, in association with The O'Neill Film and Theatrical Foundation, will present the play's world premiere run tonight, August 5 to 23 at 13th Street Repertory Company, 50 West 13th Street, NYC, directed by John Beshaw-Farrell.

Kimmel Center to Present World Premiere of HELLO! SADNESS!

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts announces the world premiere of Hello! Sadness!, a one-woman comedy debuting in SEI Innovation Studio on Thursday, June 11, Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 at 8p.m. Written and performed by Philadelphia theater artist Mary Tuomanen, with direction by Annie Wilson, this solo performance is the fruition of Tuomanen's participation in the 2014 Kimmel Center Theater Residency with celebrated poet and performance artist Dael Orlandersmith.

TAPESTRY OPERA presents a recreation of the classic myth in the world premiere of M'DEA UNDONE. The 5th Avenue Theatre has announced a major new musical commission. Based on the spell-binding novel by Anne Rice, Cry to Heaven is a dramatic new musical with music and lyrics by three-time Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Matthew Wilder and a book by Roy Freirich and Debrah Neal. The show will be developed through The 5th Avenue's New Works Program focusing on early stage cultivation of new musicals, one of seven musicals in various stages of development.

San Francisco Opera's 2014-15 Season opens tonight, September 5, 2014 with a dramatic new production of Vincenzo Bellini's bel canto masterpiece Norma, starring American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in one of opera's most dazzling and demanding roles. American mezzo-soprano Daveda Karanas is the young priestess Adalgisa; Italian tenor Marco Berti is Pollione; and American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn is Oroveso. Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus and Director Kevin Newbury and set designer David Korins return to San Francisco Opera to premiere this vivid, large-scale new co-production with Toronto's Canadian Opera Company, Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Norma runs for seven performances through September 30.
