From May 22 - June 1, 2014, Houston Ballet offers up a mixed repertory program showcasing works by three of the twentieth century's greatest choreographers entitled Modern Masters. The program features the company premiere of Ji?i Kylian's comic and delightful Sechs Tanze (Six Dances), along with revivals of his playful and sexy work Petite Mort, William Forsythe's explosive In the middle, somewhat elevated and George Balanchine's complex and inventive The Four Temperaments. Houston Ballet will give six performances of the program in the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center. COLLIDE presents a modern-day version of Shakespeare's classic love story. Set in Brooklyn in the year 2000, the bare-knuckle world of New York City politics has created a blood feud between the Montague and Capulet families that has endured for generations, always simmering just below the surface and occasionally erupting into public view, sometimes with tragic consequences. The production features eleven professional dancers, two vocalists, original Shakespearean text and a four-string quartet playing popular music hits from artists such as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and U2.

Essential Theatre has just announced Theroun Patterson and Karla Jennings as co-winners of the 2014 Playwriting Competition. 'It's taken us a long while to come to a decision this year,' observes Peter Hardy, Founding Artistic Director of the theatre, 'because of the large number of strong submissions we received. But we feel that both of these plays are worthy of the prizes and will be excellent contributions to our Festival this summer.' Both playwrights will receive a $600 cash prize and a full production in this summer's Essential Theatre Festival.

Jim Simpson, Artistic Director and Carol Ostrow, Producing Director of The Flea Theater announce the groundbreaking on their future home in TriBeCa. A few years back, The Flea purchased a building at 20 Thomas Street, four blocks south of their current location, with seed money from their Board of Directors and State and City funding. Now they have raised 95% of the funds needed to build a brand new state of the art three theater performing arts complex. The new Flea complex will allow them to continue to produce daring and adventurous theater all the while ensuring a permanent and stable home for the off-off-Broadway company. A Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new building project will take place today, December 5 featuring city officials as well as Flea artists, supporters and invited friends.

Now in its 16th season, Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook will continue to expand its scope celebrating the best in American singing and songwriting. New this year, the opening night concert will befree, in the David Rubenstein Atrium, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. 'Live From Lincoln Center,' the Emmy Award-winning program broadcast nationally on PBS stations, will shoot four of the first week's American Songbook concerts in The Allen Room: by James Naughton, Lawrence Brownlee, Jason Isbell, and Patina Miller. These performances will be broadcast nationally beginning in Spring 2014. In addition, American Songbook concerts taking place in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center will be live-streamed via http://watch.lincolncenter.org.
