Each October, the Merchant's House Museum opens its doors for a series of 'spirited' events thematically built around its unusual reputation.

The Des Moines Playhouse presents 'The Princess and the Pea,' Friday, Oct. 2. This story is the first in the 2015-16 season of Friday Funday, a creative participatory story theatre program for children ages 4-6. Performances are at the Playhouse, Friday, Oct. 2, at 9:30 AM, 10:45 AM, and 1:30 PM. Shows are approximately 45 minutes in length. Tickets are $6 per person, adults and children, and seating is reserved. Santa Barbara, CA — The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra will open its 37th season with a compelling program of works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky, including the latter's incandescent Firebird Suite (1919 version), at Santa Barbara's historic Lobero Theatre on October 3. Also featuring Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D Minor and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture, the concert will begin at 7:30 pm. Subscription and single-ticket sales are underway.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company officially opens their 2015-2016 mainstage season with the epic, dazzling, romantic comedy "Cyrano de Bergerac" based on the translation written by Anthony Burgess of the play written by Edmond Rostand playing September 11- October 3, 2015.  This production is directed by CSC Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips and features Cincinnati Shakespeare Resident Ensemble members Jeremy Dubin and Caitlin McWethy. Odyssey Opera, a Boston-­??based opera company dedicated to exploring the full spectrum of adventurous repertoire, presents the Boston premiere of one of France's great operas, Le Cid (1885), composed by Jules Massenet (1842-­??1912). A rarity that has been sadly absent from opera houses worldwide in the 20th and 21st centuries, Le Cid is rarely produced in the United States. With its grand themes of honor, love, bravery, and sacrifice, Le Cid encompasses the sweep of historical epic and the depths of the heart. Conducted by Gil Rose, this one-­??night-­??only performance breathes new dramatic life into the legendary medieval Spanish warrior Rodrigue, known as “Le Cid” (“The Lord”) (played by American tenor Paul Groves.)
