Trinity Wall Street will launch its 2013-14 season with 'Celebrating Britten' - a September to January festival devoted to the music of Benjamin Brittenin honor of this year's centenary of the composer's birth. Much of the festival will be part of Concerts at One, Trinity Wall Street's long-running series of free concerts on Thursday afternoons. 'Celebrating Britten' will explore the great British composer's orchestral, vocal and chamber works in performances by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Trinity Youth Chorus and NOVUS NY led by Grammy Award-nominated music director Julian Wachner, with guest artists including tenor Nicholas Phan, chamber ensemble Decoda and the piano duo of Grace Cho & Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, among others. Many of the concerts will present Britten's music alongside that of contemporaries such as Berg, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff and Poulenc. Star cellist Matt Haimovitz will perform two recitals as part of the festival, on October 17 and November 21, contextualizing two of Britten's suites for solo cello with solo works by later composers including Ligeti, John Tavener and Jennifer Higdon. In addition to 'Celebrating Britten' events as part of Concerts at One, there will be special Britten festival concerts on November 18 (the Choir of Trinity Wall Street in Britten's Sacred and Profane and other choral works) and December 9 (cellistElinor Frey playing Bach and Britten, on both Baroque and modern cello). And holiday-themed works by Britten will be performed as part of Trinity's Twelfth Night Festival, including the ever-popular Ceremony of Carols (Dec 26) and St. Nicolas (Jan 5). As I glance at the calendar for 2013, I find that there are many productions that I am already looking forward to. The Old Globe today announced the complete cast and creative team of its 100th anniversary production of the George Bernard Shaw classic Pygmalion. Starring Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard (The Invention of Love, Born Yesterday) as Professor Henry Higgins and Charlotte Parry (The Importance of Being Earnest, The Real Thing) as Eliza Doolittle, the production coincides with the 100th anniversary of Pygmalion's 1913 premiere in Vienna, Austria. Directed by Nicholas Martin (Butley, Present Laughter), Pygmalion will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, Jan. 12 - Feb. 17, 2013. The production will run from tonight, October 5th through the 20th at the theatre's iconic namesake venue in the historic Factory.

Named one of NPR's Favorite Artists of 2011, American tenor Nicholas Phan returns to the music of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) on a new album available October 9 from Avie. On the eve of the Britten centenary, Still Falls the Rain showcases both the great British composer's remarkable gift as a collaborator and Phan's increasingly lauded interpretative powers. The album features The Heart of the Matter, a song cycle for tenor, narrator, horn, and piano, performed here by renowned actor Alan Cumming, as well as the principal hornist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Jennifer Montone, and pianist Myra Huang, Phan's long-time recital partner.

The tre' avant-garde Dark Night Series at Kumu Kahua Theatre, presents "Courage", part of the "Ruinedmap" dance performance series. Featuring the fierce and penetrating stone flute maestro Kazuya Yokozawa who provides the sole musical accompaniment and Dancers Gwen Arbaugh, Spencer Garrod, and Junco Mizumochi. A spotlight follows Yokozawa as he gains the stage, and one gets the disturbing impression (based on his garb and artifacts on the mat he sedately sits upon) that we are about to observe a Samurai committing Hari Kiri. The stage is again shrouded in darkness, and the piercing notes of a flute sound. The dancers appear in a circle of light. They seem haunted, wraith-like with scant leotards and shredded white cloth, faces smeared with translucent white paint. Beautiful, strange and distant, their expressions offer no emotion, lost in a trance (or dream). They move. An untrained eye may consider their performance stilted and random, but I can see the discipline, focus and skill....

Roland Auctions of New York City will be selling the estate of legendary playwright, director, and screenwriter, Arthur Laurents on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Mr. Laurents, whose credits include West Side Story, Gypsy, La Cage Aux Folles, Hallelujah, Baby and The Way We Were, amongst many others, had a long and distinguished career, both on Broadway and in Hollywood.
