Susan Miller's 20TH CENTURY BLUES Gets New York Premiere

Producer Lida Orzeck and Executive Producer Eva Price are pleased to announce the New York premiere of the new play, 20TH CENTURY BLUES, from Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winner and two-time OBIE Award-winning playwright Susan Miller (My Left Breast). Two-time OBIE Award-winner and Tony Award-nominee Emily Mann (Having Our Say, Anna in the Tropics) will direct the 10-week limited engagement beginning November 12 with performances through January 28 and an official opening night set for November 26. 20TH CENTURY BLUES will play at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 W. 42nd Street).

Top of fall, Quest Theatre Ensemble will follow up its production of THE FANTASTICKS with another Off-Broadway offering blessed with longevity and universal appeal: the musical comedy revue I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE, by Tony-winning wordsmith Joe DiPietro and composer and entertainer Jimmy Roberts. A charming and tender look inside our deepest, darkest, most secret thoughts - whether out on a date, making headway toward the altar, or juggling the challenges of marriage - the musical will continue Quest Theatre Ensemble's 15th season on Saturday, September 23, 2017 following one preview performance on Friday, September 22. The performance schedule will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm through October 29, 2017. Additionally, there will be a Special Accessible Programming Matinee with curb to seat assistances, pre-show touch tour and a conversation with the artists Saturday, October 21 at 2 pm.

Ellen McDougall today announced the full cast for The Unknown Island, her inaugural production of Artistic Director of Gate Theatre.  She directs Jon Foster, Hannah Ringham, Thalissa Teixera and Zubin Varla in the adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago's short story which opens on 18 September, with previews from 11 September, running until 7 October.

The Globe's Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein returns to the outdoor festival stage, with a cast featuring some of the nation's finest classical actors, to bring Shakespeare's iconic play to life. Revenge thriller, ghost story, psychological drama, political epic, and family saga, all packed in one, with unforgettable characters, theatrical masterstrokes, and world-famous lines. The Prince of Denmark comes home from college to find his father dead, his mother remarried to his uncle, and a spine-chilling apparition roaming the palace grounds. Hamlet plays August 6 - September 10, 2017, in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Previews run August 6-11, with opening night on Saturday, August 12 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets start at $30 and are on sale now to the general public.

NYC Department of Veteran's Services Public Artist in Residence (PAIR) Bryan Doerries and Theater of War Productions  will engage diverse audiences in a meditation on racism, violence, and social justice by bringing together leading actors for a dramatic reading of scenes from Sophocles' Antigone-an ancient Greek tragedy exploring what takes place when personal conviction and the law clash, and violence ensues. The readings are accompanied by a gospel choir performance of original music by Philip Woodmore performed by an ensemble that includes police officers, local educators, and community members from Ferguson and St. Louis, MO and Brooklyn, NY. Gathering victims of violence, concerned citizens, members of faith communities, and the general public, the event culminates in an open facilitated discussion to create a dialogue between these communities and foster compassion, understanding, and positive action, while helping them heal from their personal experiences with violence in their neighborhoods.

NYC Public Artist in Residence Expands Work to Include Projects on Domestic Violence, Homelessness and More

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and Department of Veterans' Services today announced new projects as part of Bryan Doerries' evolving two-year appointment as a NYC Public Artist in Residence (PAIR), a City initiative to enhance civic services through artistic practice. Expanding on their current work through PAIR of presenting theater projects to nurture a deeper understanding of issues facing veterans, Doerries and his company, Theater of War Productions, will partner with City agencies and community organizations-including the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV) and the Mayor's Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety-to present new projects that address domestic violence, neighborhood violence, homelessness, and more. Working with veterans, military, and civilian communities, the company will also continue to broaden programs focused on veterans' affairs, police and community relations, racial injustice, gun violence, and mental health.
