Mesmerizing virtuoso, former child prodigy and so famous she goes by one name—Midori—joins Pacific Symphony to perform Erich Korngold's achingly beautiful Violin Concerto, which the composer reimagined from four of his acclaimed film scores. The exquisite program is led by Grammy and Juno award-winning music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Bramwell Tovey, of whom Musical America has called: “One of the most versatile and charismatic musicians in the world.” Tovey also leads the orchestra in grand and thrilling music inspired by the galaxy—Gustav Holst's dramatic interpretation of the cosmos, “The Planets,” enhanced by the voices of the women of Pacific Chorale (John Alexander, artistic director); plus, Debussy's luminous piano piece, “Clair de Lune,” orchestrated by the legendary Leopold Stokowski. 

The Red House Arts Center in Syracuse, NY presents Sarah Ruhl's ambitious, yet light hearted work, Passion Play.  Hailed by the New Yorker's John Lahr as "extraordinary", "bold", and "inventive," Passion Play takes us on a humorous, yet unsettling journey filled with lust, whimsy, and a lot of fish. Performances will take place at the Red House Arts Center main stage from April 7-17, 2016.

To launch Way Off Broadway's new expanded six-show 2016 Season, the theatre will open with another classic, Anything Goes. The Cole Porter musical will kick off the season on Friday evening, January 15th.

The chill of autumn is slowly leaving for the cold of winter, but record numbers of north Georgia theatre goers are gathering around the warm glow of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance's production of MARY POPPINS. GTA, now in its 36th season, opened to sellout crowds for the stage production of P.L. Travers' classic story. The production has been extended for a third week of performances, now running through Nov. 21, and with a week and a half to go, MARY POPPINS has already broken GTA ticket and revenue records.

Pacific Symphony musicians shine in this intimate musical foray into the minds of some of the world's best composers during the 2015-16 Café Ludwig chamber series led by pianist and host Orli Shaham—kicking off with “Schubert's 'Trout' and More.” An afternoon of music inspired by literature, the program opens with Korngold's joyful Suite from “Much Ado About Nothing” for Violin and Piano, which he adapted from his own score for the 1918 Viennese production of Shakespeare's play. The early German romance “Undine” is expressed in the imaginative interplay between flute and piano as Principal Flutist Benjamin Smolen joins Shaham for this Sonata in E Major, written by Carl Reinecke. The performance concludes with one of the most popular pieces in the chamber music repertoire, Schubert's Piano Quintet in A Major, which offers dramatic storytelling and is inspired by a song he wrote two years earlier, based on a pastoral poem titled “The Trout.” 

It has been close to two decades since this was seen in Adelaide, and this is a worthy performance.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today the details for Action and Anarchy: The Films of Seijun Suzuki, November 6-17.

Staged by the Department of Drama (SU Drama) in Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts (SU: VPA), Kiss Me, Kate performs October 2-10 in the Archbold Theater at the Syracuse Stage/Drama Theater Complex, 820 East Genesee Street. When Bent first premiered in 1979 its persecution of gays in Nazi Germany was a real eye opener. This was before the onset of AIDS...in the first scene, the depiction of Max's (Patrick Heusinger)one night stand and his gay relationship with a dancer could have been taken right out of contemporary West Hollywood were it not for the fact that we are told up front that the play takes place in 1934-36. The violence against gays that follows is staggering and horrifying. Deep down we knew that being homosexual had built-in problems and tensions, but did we really think about it so seriously? Did we really know how ugly it all was back then? And what about now? In spite of marriage equality in the US, in Kenya and in other areas of the world, the struggle for sexual freedom unbelievably goes on...to this very day. In a rare revival, Moises Kaufman brilliantly directs this new production of Bent at the Mark Taper Forum, and you'd be a fool to miss it. The cast is extraordinary, and Martin Sherman's poignant lyricism is simultaneously funny, touching and thoroughly riveting from moment to moment.
