With Bedlam's Saint Joan concluding Folger Theatre's 2017/18 season, The Washington Post chief theater critic Peter Marks sits down with the production's celebrated director Eric Tucker for a lively theater talk on Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00pm. Marks and Tucker will discuss the innovative, stripped-down staging of George Bernard Shaw's classic Saint Joan, the success of Eric's Bedlam theater in New York, bringing Jane Austen to the stage (Folger's Sense and Sensibility), approaching Shakespeare and other classic authors for a modern audience, and more.

Soprano Nadine Sierra has been named the winner of the 13th annual Beverly Sills Artist Award for young singers at the Metropolitan Opera. The $50,000 award, the largest of its kind in the United States, is given to extraordinarily gifted singers between the ages of 25 and 40 who have already appeared in featured solo roles at the Met. The award, given in honor of Beverly Sills, was established in 2006 by an endowment gift from the late Agnes Varis, a managing director on the Met board. In 2009 Sierra became the youngest ever winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and has gone on to make her mark at the Met with memorable performances in Verdi's Rigoletto, and Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Idomeneo and Don Giovanni. In the Met's 2018-19 season, Sierra will reprise the role of Gilda in Rigoletto.

Nuffield Southampton Theatres Present The World Premiere Of SS MENDI: DANCING THE DEATH DRILL by critically acclaimed Cape Town-based Isango Ensemble. Part of 14-18 NOW, the UK's official arts programme for the First World War centenary, the production commemorates an untold tragedy from WW1 that took place off the coast of Southampton. Prior to rehearsals beginning Samuel Hodges, Director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres will visit Cape Town where the SS Mendi began its journey. Mark Dornford-May directs the production which opens at Nuffield Southampton Theatres on Wednesday 4 July with previews from Friday 29 June and performances until Saturday 14 July. Dubbed the 'Black Titanic', the sinking of SS Mendi was one of the worst maritime disasters in the 20th century in UK waters.

Beginning April 14, Mile Square Theatre presents public performances of its revival production of Y York's The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi. Restaging its 2011 production for a new audience, MST is thrilled to reunite much of the creative team from the earlier production, including MST Artistic Director Chris O'Connor and actor Blaire Brooks (Bull, Blacklist) as Darzee the Tailor Bird. The cast includes MST regular Andrew Baldwin (Frog and Toad), Cameron Blankenship (Lyric Rep), and Arielle Legere (Princess K.I.M.).

Brimming with music, love and longing, Shakespeare's enchanting play transports audiences to a world of comedic mayhem, mistaken identity and unrequited passion. This co-production with the Resident Ensemble Players comes to Polonsky Shakespeare Center (262 Ashland Pl, Brooklyn), May 10-27.

Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor returns to the Met starring Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti and Pretty Yende as the title character. Vittorio Grigolo and Michael Fabiano share the role of Lucia's lover Edgardo, with Massimo Cavalletti, Luca Salsi, and Quinn Kelsey as Enrico, her villainous brother. Vitalij Kowaljow and Alexander Vinogradov share the role of the chaplain Raimondo.
