Theatreworks Presents THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, 8/25-9/19
by Nicolas Coburn - Jul 29, 2010

A sweeping saga of love beneath the Tuscan sun, TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley presents the epic Tony Award-winning musical THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, with book by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer. Set to the soaring melodies of what the Chicago Tribune called 'the most beautiful score written for the American musical theater in 20 years,' this breath-taking musical is the poignant tale of two extraordinary young people and the overwhelming power of love. Featuring Broadway veterans Rebecca Eichenberger and Martin Vidnovic and regional favorites Whitney Bashor and Constantine Germancos, with TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley at the helm, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA plays August 25-September 19, 2010 (press opening August 28) at TheatreWorks at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. For tickets and information the public may call (650) 463-1960 or visit www.theatreworks.org.

Review - Hamlet & Little Shop of Horrors
by Kristin Salaky - Jun 18, 2008

Eloquence without the elegance is how I'd describe Michael Stuhlbarg's scruffy, hyperactive and somewhat nerdy take on the title role in director Oskar Eustis' amusing hodgepodge of a production of Hamlet. Though perfectly placid for the first several minutes of his performance, silently contemplating his father's death and his uncle's marriage to his newly widowed mother at a downstage eternal flame that perpetually flickers its symbolism throughout the evening, he's soon wildly wringing his hands with nervous excitement, flailing his arms about in range and stomping his feet to the floor like the kind of actor he'll later be warning his players not to be. In fact, it's not until the prince starts feigning madness that he begins resembling a grown-up. It's not an interpretation that will tug at your soul, but it'll damn well get your attention without taxing your brain.
