The Scottsboro Boys - 2010 - Broadway History , Info & More

The Scottsboro Boys is based on the notorious "Scottsboro" case in the 1930s, where nine African American men were unjustly accused of attacking two white women on a train in Alabama. The young men were convicted by an all-white jury and spent years in jail, while the case was tried and retried. In the tradition of their classic musicals Cabaret and Chicago, Kander and Ebb explore this dark chapter of American history in a daringly inventive and startling entertainment.

A Perilous Page of History to Turn
2 / 10

I had no trouble imagining a play by Mr. Thompson about the Scottsboro trials that could have introduced a new generation to one of the most troubling episodes in modern American history-but I doubt that any Broadway producer would have sunk a dime into it. In its place, then, we get a musical that slathers this terrible tale in a thick coat of musical-comedy frosting that has been spiked with cheap, elephantine irony. I can't imagine a nastier-tasting recipe.

'The Scottsboro Boys' at the Lyceum Theatre
5 / 10

It's sharp and snappy, imaginative and heartfelt. It has a real American tragedy to tell and some of the best in the business to tell it.

THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, the exhilarating new Kander & Ebb musical, opens Sunday, October 31 at the Lyceum Theatre (149 West 45th Street). THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS is the final collaboration by musical theatre giants John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret). Based on the notorious 'Scottsboro' case in the 1930s (in which nine African-American men were unjustly accused of a terrible crime) this musical explores a fascinating chapter in American history. SOUND OFF: Hymns to Hims
by Robert Diamond - October 14, 2010

This week we are taking a listen to a stunning new release of a brand new Broadway score coming from one of the most celebrated and cherished American songwriting teams in Broadway and Hollywood history - if only for 'Cabaret' and 'New York, New York' if not everything else as well - the incandescent Kander & Ebb. Today we take an indepth look at one of their final scores together as captured on a cast recording in anticipation of the Broadway bow of this show in its off-Broadway to Broadway transfer later this month. Shout 'Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey' - it's the Original Off-Broadway Cast Recording of THE SCOTSBORRO BOYS and that alone gives us reason to sing hymns to the many hims - as well as the single her, the director/choreographer at the helm, multi-Tony-winning Susan Stroman - overflowing with appreciation and praise to these fine craftsmen and the cast conveying the controversial and candid topic at the center of the show. Broadway rarely has this much sardonic bite - and biting bang - for your buck than this show and subsequent cast recording do. Kander & Ebb once again show us how it's done, and done best - and rewrite all of the rules while doing it.
