This past Saturday an impromptu performance at the Huntington Mall began with a shout known to all musical lovers: 'Pulitzer and Hearst, they think we're nothing' Are we nothing'?' To which an excited mob of newsies replied tenaciously, 'No!' Audiences were then treated to an impressive flash mob rendition of 'The World Will Know' during a lull in the Macy's Prom Fashion Event. After this commanding performance, there's no doubt in anybody's mind just how great First Stage Theatre Company's production of Newsies will be.

Venetia Stifler, executive and artistic director of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts and the 2019 Ruth Page Award Committee are pleased to announce their selections for this year's Ruth Page Awards. The recipients include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and its Artistic Director Robert Battle and Chicago Dance History Project and its Executive and Artistic Director Jenai Cutcher.  The 2019 Awards will be presented immediately before Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's performance celebrating 60 years of Ailey Ascending and the 50th anniversary of the Company's first performance at the Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Ida B. Wells Dr., Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the 2019 Ruth Page Awards are $60 and include a private reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Ailey performance at 7:30 p.m.  This performance is part of Ravinia's annual Ruth Page Festival of Dance.  Tickets and event information is available at EventBrite.com. Geffen Playhouse today announced eight productions that will make up its 2019/2020 season, with one additional production to be announced. This marks the second lineup curated by Artistic Director Matt Shakman and the 24th season for the Los Angeles theater. The season will launch Tuesday, August 20, 2019 and run through Sunday, July 19, 2020.

Vilna, a new play by Ira Fuchs directed by Joseph Discher, will begin its limited Off-Broadway World Premiere engagement at the Theatre at St. Clement's (423 West 46th Street, between Ninth & Tenth Avenues) on Monday March 11th. Opening Night is set for Wednesday March 20th (7pm). This limited Off-Broadway engagement continues through Sunday April 14th only.

In recent years, Center for the Arts has certainly upped the ante with musical productions which have, consistently, been better than the one before, raising the bar for all the shows still to come. Case in point: Disney's Newsies, which closed its sold-out run in Murfreesboro on Sunday.

Greenville Theatre's Executive Artistic Director Allen McCalla announced the theatre's name modification from GREENVILLE LITTLE THEATRE to GREENVILLE THEATRE on Saturday, January 19. This exciting announcement preceded the unveiling of the theatre's sensational 2019-2020 season. The line-up features 6 MainStage productions, including an impressive four musicals and two comedies. In addition to the MainStage productions, Greenville Theatre will produce two musicals in the cherished Theatre for Young Audiences Series, and will present three tribute shows in the popular Concert Series. A high energy line-up full of blockbusters sure to entertain all season long. 

The award-winning Company Theatre (TCT), continues its 40th anniversary celebration by announcing its 2019 theatrical performance season, featuring the finest productions in theatre, music, comedy and mystery.

Extra, Extra, read all about it! Disney Newsies is coming to Marshwood High School! Based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, Newsies depicts the story of New York newsies, boys and girls who sold newspapers on the streets, who went up against two newspaper publishers, Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal, to fight for their chance to earn a liveable wage.

Very few actors can boast the resume, replete with some of the most iconic roles in musical theater, of Hume-Fogg Academic High School's Ava Locknar. Now a senior in Daron Bruce's and Lisa Forbis' renowned musical theatre program at the school, Ava's been at home on Broadway - albeit Nashville's Broadway - for four years, although it doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to envision her on the Great White Way, taking on more musical theater challenges.

Roundabout Theatre Co. presents the world premiere Broadway production of Bernhardt/Hamlet, opening on Broadway tonight.

Today, The Thursday Five(+1) shines the spotlight on four members of the Chaffin's Barn cast of Newsies - David Ridley, Samantha Blake, Natalie Rankin and Kayla Petrille - who took time out from their rigorous regimen of rehearsals to tell our readers more about themselves and to offer their own suggestions for why you should come see their show, which runs through October 22.

For the better part of the present decade, playwright/director Richard Nelson has been going seriously Chekhovian, first with a quartet of plays set during the Obama years in the Rhinebeck, New York home of a family named Apple and then with a trio of visits during the 2016 presidential campaign with the nearby Gabriel family.

As Labor Day quickly approaches, it's time to take a look at all of the upcoming shows hitting Broadway between now and the the end of the year. With thirteen new shows opening between now and then, this season has something for everyone!

This reviewer is in awe of what he saw opening weekend of Valley Youth Theatre's production of NEWSIES The Musical: A spectacular triumph of talent and artistry, all the more impressive because of the amazing young performers (ages 12 to 18!) whose versatility and range of technical proficiency is jaw-dropping. Kale Burr is terrific! Tony Spinosa's choreography is tremendous! So is the entire ensemble! An auspicious way to begin the company's 30th Anniversary Season! Runs thru Aug 26 at Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix.

Based on the 1992 Disney film of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the real-life newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City, Newsies tells the captivating story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. When I last met up with these newsboys, it was during their strike at DPAC back in 2015. Since then, the tour closed up shop after a two-year run, became a hit Fathom Event, and is now available for licensing to schools, community, and regional theatres all over the world.

Choreography isn't as eye-popping in CPCC Summer Theatre's NEWSIES as the Broadway version was, but the hero's role and all the colorful elders are performed on the same lofty level as the impressive set design.

Filled with high-energy music and dancing and a lively, eager-to-please spirit embedded in its DNA, this brand-new Southern California regional theater production of NEWSIES---which continues performances at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through June 24---is a wonderfully caffeinated jolt of a stage show, highlighted by a remarkably talented and athletically-blessed ensemble that leaps and belts one show stopping number after another. What a treat for every Fansie!

The Hale Centre Theatre in Gilbert continues its tradition of "Powerhouse Musicals, Hilarious Comedies, and Family Friendly Shows" with its 16th season beginning in August.

For the first time, an 'abled' actor will take on the role of Crutchie in Disney's NEWSIES musical, as the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in NJ breaks boundaries with its casting.

This summer, Theater at Monmouth celebrates wily, wicked, and wonderful women through classic literature's most fantastic females. In this spirit, TAM dedicates the 2018 Roar: The Year of the Woman Season to Nancy Bates Ludewig. Jules Massenet's bewitching adaptation of the enduring Cinderella story, Cendrillon, makes its debut at the Metropolitan Opera this season in this imaginative production from Laurent Pelly, with Joyce DiDonato reprising the glorious lead role, one of the most charming in the repertoire, after wowing audiences and critics alike in London in 2011.
