When A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER debuted on Broadway In October 2013, very few, if any, theatrical observers pegged the show for a two-plus-year main-stem run and four Tony Awards. After debuting at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut the previous November, and having another out-of-town tryout the following March at the Old Globe in San Diego, the show came to Broadway with very little fan-fare. Adapted by Morpurgo and Emma Rice, who also directs, 946 is a Kneehigh production presented in association with Birmingham Repertory and Berkeley Repertory Theatres. A musical about a serial killer could never be more funny. This show won four Tonys at the 68th Tony Awards in June 2014, including Best Musical. It is based on the 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal by Roy Horniman and its screen adaptation, the 1949 British film Kind Hearts and Coronets. Characters in the play are penned after real-life English aristocrats, primarily a frivolous British Prime Minister.
