For his debut solo album, rising Los Angeles-based pianist Thomas Kotcheff has taken on a formidable challenge: the premiere recording of American composer Frederic Rzewski's virtuosic (and timely) Songs of Insurrection, based on protest songs from seven countries around the world.

Harvey Williams, Founder and Executive Director of KC Melting Pot Theatre (KCMPT) in Kansas City announced that Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley has been appointed as Artistic Director. After three years as Associate Artistic Director, Hodges Persley has helped to position KCMPT as a theater company to watch in the Kansas City regional theater landscape. Under her creative influence, the company has produced timely and thought-provoking shows such as the revivals of Angelina W. Grimke's 1916 anti-lynching play Rachel and Amiri Baraka's 1964 Obie award-winning play Dutchman as well as cutting edge new American voices such as Pulitzer Prize winner Dominique Morriseau and emerging playwright Lewis J. Morrow.  Hodges Persley draws season inspiration from an eclectic array of sources from historic social and arts movements to #Black Lives Matter and African American music genres.

The Drama League (Executive Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks) has announced casting for DirectorFest 2019: The 35th Annual Directors Festival, the only festival in the United States exploring the art of contemporary stage directing. Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) returns to the Metropolitan Opera for seven performances November 14–December 8, 2018. Bizet's opera tells the story of a beautiful Hindu temple priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her love. The cast is led by soprano Pretty Yende as Leïla, tenor Javier Camarena as Nadir, and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien as Zurga, led by conductor Emmanuel Villaume.

On January 13, 17 and 19 Franz Welser-Most and The Cleveland Orchestra continue an ongoing commitment to present opera at Severance Hall with a made-for-Cleveland production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos which is being performed for the first time in the Orchestra's history. In his years as music director, Welser-Most has led The Cleveland Orchestra in performances of many orchestral works by Richard Strauss, as well as presentations of four other Strauss operas: Elektra (2004), Der Rosenkavalier (2007), Salome (2012), and Daphne (2015).

In conjunction with our 20th anniversary production of The Laramie Project, the Provincetown Theater at 238 Bradford Street in Provincetown, MA will sponsor a series of post-performance "Community Conversations" following matinee performances during the show's three-week run (October 11-28, performs Thursdays - Saturdays at 7pm, Sundays at 2pm). The first in the series will begin at 4:15pm, Sunday, Oct 14. Throughout the series, topics will pertain to socially relevant themes coursing through the veins of this modern American classic -- which reveals a community's response to the brutal murder of the openly gay college student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. Free of charge, open to the public, each of the "Community Conversations" focuses on a different theme relevant to the play, lead by a moderator and host of panelists in the field.

Alan Lerner and Frederick Lowe's 1956 musical megahit 'My Fair Lady' opened last weekend at Musical Theater Heritage inside its three-venue Crown Center complex with a re-imagination by Kansas City's Heidi Van. This cast is multi-racial and sensitive to the modern relative roles of men and women in today's society.

The deadline for completed applications is Noon (12pm) US EDT on Friday, September 7, 2018.
