IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE Radio Play & SANTALAND DIARIES At Florida Rep
by Beau Higgins - Dec 9, 2011

It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is an inventive retelling of the timeless story, and a perfect blend of Christmas cheer and theatrical magic. Audiences will be immersed in the nostalgic charm of the 1940's from the minute they enter the theatre - with ushers in red uniforms, live Foley sound effects and real vintage commercials. The Arcade Theatre will be transformed into a New York City radio studio, and the magic will begin a half hour before curtain time when the theatre will come to life with a pre-show glimpse into the world of the mid-1940's.

Review - A Little Journey
by Ben Peltz - Jun 7, 2011

Though playwright Rachel Crothers was regarded as the toast of the town for many a Broadway season - she had 29 plays debut there in the years between 1906 and 1940 - she's scarcely know by 21st Century playgoers.  Fortunately, the Mint Theater Company has been doing its part to return her name to the limelight; first with their mounting of her clever take on religious fads, Susan and God, and now with a sweeter, more uplifting comedy/melodrama - one that was a finalist for the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama - A Little Journey.

Caldwell, Shepherd lead cast of TCT's MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940
by BWW News Desk - Apr 16, 2011

Do the names 'Joe Shepherd' or 'Corey Caldwell' ring a bell? No? Well, I just bet their voices would: Both men have been featured in numerous radio and television commercials, whether as the voice of Brentwood Jewelers (in the case of Corey Caldwell) or as the creator of a Peabody Award-winning program in Washington, D.C. (as Joe Shepherd was).

Think you can't turn back the hands of time? At Rick's Restorations in Las Vegas, Nevada, they do it every day. Customers bring in their own pieces of history; dusty, oddball artifacts beyond repair - perhaps a 1940's Pepsi dispenser or a Prohibition-era slot machine - and come away with a restored collectible that looks and performs like new. What's more, the treasure is often worth a lot more than before.

BWW Reviews: THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940 at Towne Centre Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 9, 2011

John Bishop's The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 is a deliciously campy send-up of movies, mysteries and musicals - and now, thanks to a top-flight production from Brentwood's Towne Centre Theatre, local audiences can once again revel in the play's cleverly constructed, though thoroughly implausible, plot brought to life by an accomplished cast.

Review - The Spidey Project: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
by Ben Peltz - Mar 15, 2011

In the roughly five years between November of 1935 and December of 1940, the team of Rodgers and Hart opened nine new musicals on Broadway.  These included revolutionary shows like On Your Toes, which changed the use of dance in musical theatre, and the underappreciated Pal Joey, which brought new sophistication to the characters and themes that could be featured in a musical.  There were also popular hits like Babes In Arms, The Boys From Syracuse, Jumbo and Too Many Girls that introduced classic American songbook entries like 'My Funny Valentine,' 'The Lady Is A Tramp,' 'Falling In Love With Love,' 'My Romance' and 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was.'

'Grey Gardens, The Musical' South Florida Premiere
by Beau Higgins - Feb 12, 2011

Rising Action Theatre is honored to present the South Florida Premiere of the Tony Award-winning Grey Gardens, the Musical. Based on the highly acclaimed 1975 Maysles Brothers film documentary, it is the story of Jackie Kennedy's relatives 'Big Edie' Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter 'Little Edie' and the overgrown, crumbling East Hampton mansion they shared for decades. Set at the Grey Gardens mansion, the musical follows the progression of the lives of the two Edies from their original social status as wealthy and polished aristocrats in the 1940's to their eventual existence as penniless eccentrics in a crumbling home. But, the real focus is clearly on the unending psychological struggle between a mother and a daughter. The story is joyous, heartwarming, sad, and funny.
