As schools are opening their doors and welcoming students back, class at the Mad Cow Theatre Company is also back in session with a production of Alan Bennett's 2005 Tony Winning Play, THE HISTORY BOYS. My review on the production, running through September 7th, will be up early next week. In the meantime, I was able to interview some of the cast members. Instead of your basic interview with straightforward questions, I kept with the spirit of Bennett's scholastic play by passing out the blue books with three open-ended questions about some of the themes from the play. Although these answers will not be graded, I am sure if Irwin took a glance at them he would not be regarding them as "abysmally dull".

Godspell, the heart-lifting feel-good Broadway musical from Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), is to be staged in the West End for the first time since it premiered there 42 years ago.

Carnegie Hall today announced cast additions for its gala benefit performance of Guys and Dolls on Thursday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Cast additions include: John Bolton (A Christmas Story the Musical, Curtains) as Angie the Ox; Robert Clohessy (HBO's Boardwalk Empire) as Lieutenant Brannigan; Colman Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys, Passing Strange) as Rusty Charlie; John Treacy Egan (The Producers,Sister Act) as Nicely-Nicely Johnson;Christopher Fitzgerald (Young Frankenstein,Wicked) as Benny Southstreet; Jayne Houdyshell (Follies, Romeo and Juliet) as General Matilda B. Cartwright; and Steve Schirripa (HBO's The Sopranos) as Big Jule. Hot Box Girls include Jenny LaRoche, Paloma Garcia-Lee, Samantha Sturm, and Katie Webber; crapshooters are Stephen Carrasco, Taurean Everett, Michaeljon Slinger, Justin Urso, and Amos Wolff. The vocal ensemble is comprised of Cree Carrico, Christine DiGiallonardo, Timothy McDevitt, Max Miller, and Joseph Torello. Allison Blackwell is also featured as Agatha. The remaining cast will be announced in the coming weeks.

Dallas Theater Center announced today the award-winning cast and creative team for the world premiere new musical The Fortress of Solitude, a co-production with The Public Theater in New York City. The Fortress of Solitude is based on the nationally best-selling novel of the same name by 2005 MacArthur Fellow Jonathan Lethem. The musical is conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin, with a book by Itamar Moses, and music and lyrics by Michael Friedman. The Fortress of Solitude opens with previews on March 7 and runs through April 6. The producers of the Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical JERSEY BOYS have announced that Richard H. Blake (Legally Blonde, Wicked) will join the cast tonight, January 9, 2014 in the role of 'Tommy DeVito.' He assumes the role from Andy Karl who departs the production following the Sunday, December 1st performance. John Gardiner, who played 'Tommy' on the national tour, will perform the role from December 3, 2013 through Wednesday, January 8, 2014.
