The Insidious Trilogy: A THEATRICAL EVENT at On the Boards

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, a moment of nationwide commemoration and reflection, Spectrum Dance Theater presents The Insidious Trilogy: A THEATRICAL EVENT, a sweeping dance-theater work that examines the enduring legacy of racial violence, collective grief, and the persistent struggle for justice in American life.

While the anniversary invites celebration of democratic ideals, these works ask a more difficult question: What does freedom mean in a nation still shaped by inequality and historical trauma?

Created and directed by acclaimed choreographer Donald Byrd, the Trilogy, comprised of three dance works, Strange Fruit, Grief, and Targeted, arrives at a pivotal moment for our country.

* Strange Fruit is a searing exploration of the legacy of lynching in the United States, drawing on historical memory to illuminate the enduring impact of racial terror.
* Grief is a meditation on mourning as both a private and public experience, examining how communities carry loss across generations.
* Targeted is a contemporary reflection on violence and vulnerability in American society, confronting the realities faced by individuals and communities marked by race, identity, or difference.


Presented at On the Boards, May 22-24, the works form a triptych that traces the arc of American history through the lens of the human body—the production unfolds as an immersive theatrical experience in which audiences may encounter individual works across multiple evenings or witness the complete trilogy in a single extended performance.
