Malika Oyetimein and Sean Ryan, both first year students in the Professional Director Training Program (PDTP) at the University of Washington School of Drama, will make their debut on the UW main stage co-directing William Inge's Bus Stop.

Sean Ryan will direct the first half and Malika Oyetimein the second half. They share the same cast of first-year MFA actors, but those actors will switch roles at intermission. Each director also works with a separate costume designer.

It's a unique experiment that challenges the students to work collaboratively on creating a cohesive production while also maintaining their own unique vision. "This process has been one of exhilarating growth in the art of collaboration," states Malika Oyetimein. "As co-directors, Sean and I had to delve into the world of the play and come up with a language that was evocative and affecting to describe our halves of the story. The moments that we found of mutual connection based in story and imagination were some of the best moments of the process."

In Bus Stop, five weary travelers and their bus driver find themselves stranded at a small town diner in the middle of the night, waiting out a snow storm. A nightclub chanteuse, a belligerent cowboy and his guitar-strumming sidekick, a hard-drinking college professor on the run from his past, the bus driver, the proprietor of the diner, and a naïve young waitress reveal their hopes, dreams, loves, and fears, while the town sheriff does his best to maintain order.

Bus Stop previews April 22 and 23 and runs April 24 - May 3. Performances are Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets range from $10-20 and are available online or over the phone through the ArtsUW Ticket Office, 206-543-4880 / drama.uw.edu/performances.
