Each year the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) honors outstanding business and philanthropic members of the Seattle community with awards such as Business of the Year, Business Leader of the year, and Nonprofit of the Year. This year GSBA awards Dennis Coleman a Special Recognition: Voice for Social Justice Award which goes to an individual, or organization that has made a great impact in our entire community, and is bigger than any one award category. Past recipients include Senator Ed Murray, Force 10 Hoops (Seattle Storm owners), King County Executive Ron Sims, Representative Jamie Pedersen, Lambda Legal, Charlie Brydon, and Major Margaret Witt.

Award criteria includes the following:
·         Exemplifies the highest standards of their profession;
·         Demonstrates excellence and success in their business and profession;
·         Promotes diversity, equality and inclusiveness in their workplace and/or professional capacity;
·         Demonstrates leadership in the community;
·         Engages in significant volunteer activities and be a positive LGBT or allied role model for others;
·         Visibly supports the LGBT community by providing contributions and/or in-kind services and support to nonprofit organizations, political issues, or other community-wide;
·         And openly supports issues that affect the spirit, pride, and diversity of gay men, lesbians, transgender and/or bisexual people.

In the past GSBA has honored Seattle Men’s Chorus as Nonprofit of the Year, however as GSBA’s CEO Louise Chernin explained, “Dennis Coleman’s creative leadership and vision defies the criteria for any one award. He has brought our community together, broken down barriers, raised awareness, created bridges and lifted us up through music that has made us smile, cry, think, belly laugh, and burst with pride. All of us in GSBA wish to shine a spotlight on his extraordinary talent and gift for using music as a vehicle to further social justice for us all. That is why we made the decision to bring back the Special Recognition: Voice for Social Justice Award for Dennis this year.”

The award will be presented at the 31st Annual GSBA Business and Humanitarian Awards Dinner, February 16th, 2012 at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront. Governor Christine Gregoire is the keynote speaker. Tickets and information are available by calling 206-363-9188 or at http://www.thegsba.org/events/events.php?type=Business+%26+Humanitarian+Awards+Dinner#923.
