Intersections Festival to Celebrate Seattle Performance

By:

Intersections: A Celebration of Seattle Performance will be happening March 22-25, 2018 at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in the Delridge neighborhood. Intersections crosses the gambit showcasing performers in improv, sketch, stand-up, burlesque, drag, storytelling, spoken word, music, theatre, and dance; however, it doesn't end there. What makes Intersections a new and exciting festival is its focus on equity, inclusion, and representation. "Seattle is a diverse city," says Jekeva Phillips, one member of the all-female team, "Why are we only seeing the same faces and hearing the same voices?" Phillips (who is featured in City Arts Magazine's 2018 Future List) was approached last year about the project by Natasha Ransom, and Kinzie Shaw of FEELINGS, an Improv duo which aims to amplify intersectional feminism in the face of a white-cis-hetero patriarchy.

All three women are active in Seattle's improv community, each one hailing from one of the three big improv houses (Shaw from Unexpected Productions, Phillips from CSz Seattle- Home of ComedySportz, and Ransom from Jet City Improv). They've got chops and they are bringing their combined 25+ years of experience to the game.

The four-day festival will feature a myriad of comedy-related acts from Seattle's best and brightest POC, Queer, Trans, non-binary, and neurodiverse performers. Each show is a different experience loaded with a variety of acts. The final day of the festival will be a series of workshops from Vogue Femme 101 to Cultivating Justice . No show or workshop in the festival will be the same, so the Intersections team strongly encourages patrons to be a part of it all. "We are so excited to be in the audience for this festival," Say co-founders Natasha Ransom and Kinzie Shaw "The talent is just unbelievably good and we want to soak as much of it in as possible."

Intersections is funded in part by The Office of Arts & Culture Seattle, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, and Planned Parenthood.
