FLIGHTS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS To Perform At Edinburgh Fringe
Chicago artist Lindsey Barlag Thornton brings the lo-fi séance-lecture to ZOO Venues.
A hybrid of theatre, performance art, puppetry and dance, flights for future generations weaves the histories of women aviators and spiritualists in America through movement, text, sound and analogue devices. Presented by acclaimed Chicago-based performance artist Lindsey Barlag Thornton - think Amelia Earhart meets Teresa of Ávila in a calming séance-lecture, powered by vintage cassette players and slide projectors.
Drawing from aviation pioneers like Bessie Coleman and Sally Ride alongside mystics like Hilma of Klint, Thornton layers these mythic figures alongside her personal family history. Thornton's great-grandmother was one of America's earliest female glider pilots; and her great-aunt, who spoke to the dead.
The resulting show is a lo-fi, intimate experience which collides with cosmic longing - where the body becomes both aircraft and altar. Cassette mixtapes, children's record players and portable slide projectors create a tactile, time-bending atmosphere that deepens the work's meditation on transmission across generations. Archives, dances, and confessions arise, grounded by sound that behaves like an inherited memory.
flights for future generations is formally inventive, quietly rigorous, and genuinely moving. A Fringe show that rewards both curiosity and a willingness to be surprised.
Performances will run August 7-30. Tickets can be purchased at the ZOO Festival website.
