Catherine Ireton/Farnham Maltings/Harlow Playhouse/Escalator East to Edinburgh Present LEAVING HOME PARTY, 1 - 23 August

By:

Singer-songwriter and actor Catherine Ireton never really left home. She took a one-way Ryanair flight to Gatwick in 2005. Now she's got a flat, a Tesco clubcard and a shared pot plant in a country she never thought she'd call home. Tonight she is having a party, a leaving home party to mark all those tiny moments of letting go.

More social event than a play, Leaving Home Party is part-gig, part wake, part theatre production that explores ideas of home and unbelonging, a story complete with cocktail sausages and songs about finding your place in the world.

Performed by Catherine and musician Leaving Home Party follows the journey of both, how they ended up living in the UK, when they decided to leave and when to stay. It's about our place in a world in which, at any one time, 10% of the world's population are on the move from one place to another.

Actor and singer Catherine Ireton, originally from Ireland, has lived in UK for 8 years. In 2009 she became the lead singer of God Help the Girl, the side project of Belle and Sebastian's front-man Stuart Murdoch with whom she recorded albums and toured internationally. While living in Edinburgh she worked with Grid Iron, Royal Lyceum Theatre and collaborated with other Scottish bands; singing her songs at the Usher Hall and performing with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. God Help The Girl is also the title of a musical feature film, written and directed by Stuart Murdoch which won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance this year and will be released in cinemas around the world later this year.

Catherine has just returned from touring the highlands and the Outer Hebrides with In Praise of Elephants, a new piece of theatre made especially for village halls by Farnham Maltings.

Leaving Home Party has been selected for Escalator East To Edinburgh. Each year Escalator East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
