Review: THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND at Florida Studio Theatre

Florida Studio Theatre impresses with their Summertime Mainstage Season opener, delivering a delightful mix of love songs, and sharp-witted comic numbers. This lively revue, perfectly suited to lift spirits during the weighty summer months, captures the essence of joy with both familiar and lesser-known tunes. Named after a song crafted for the illustrious Liza Minnelli by its songwriting team, this production first graced off-Broadway stages in March 1991. It enjoyed a successful run exceeding 400 shows, garnering accolades such as the esteemed Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical Revue. The revue's universal appeal has seen it enchant audiences across the globe, making it a timeless and cherished performance in the world of musical theater.

Within the ensemble, each artist shines as a star in their own right, showcasing their unique strengths. Noteworthy moments include Dion Simmons Grier's hilarious and expressive facial expressions during "Coffee in a Cardboard Cup" - a performance that had me bursting with laughter! Lani Corson effortlessly transitions between various characters, seamlessly embodying an aging wife one moment and a playful baby the next, before gracefully shifting back again. Her commanding presence truly stole the spotlight, especially during her captivating dance routines!

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable shift where the band has integrated itself into the play, and in The World Goes ‘Round, this integration shines brightly! They flawlessly become part of the performance and even inject themselves into the action during certain songs. Kudos are in order for the fantastic casting choices for the singers, but let's not overlook the band, who tirelessly support the show without ever receiving a break or a chance for a costume change! Their precision and talent truly elevate this performance to a whole new level of excellence.

The show was a delightful oasis in the scorching summer heat, a refreshing balm for the soul that left everyone beaming with joy and chuckling with merriment as they strolled out.

The World Goes ‘Round is playing at Florida Studio Theatre through June 30th. Tickets are still available for Matinee and Evening Shows at https://www.floridastudiotheatre.org/events-and-tickets/summer-mainstage-series-2024/the-world-goes-round/.
