Review: SONGBIRDS OF THE SEVENTIES at Florida Studio Theatre
Tickets are still available to Matinee and Evening Shows.
In a dazzling display, three enchanting singers step onto the stage, radiating sequined sparkles and infectious smiles, as they grace the audience with their presence in the latest Cabaret production at Florida Studio Theatre, SONGBIRDS OF THE SEVENTIES. This show transports us back in time to a decade that now feels like a distant memory, yet remains vividly alive in our hearts. These songbirds reignite nostalgia and invite us to reminisce about the moments when we first encountered the timeless hits of that era. So, pause for a moment and reflect on where we stood and who stood beside us when these iconic melodies first filled the airwaves!
Nancy Allen, the creative genius behind RHINTESONE COWGIRLS(some of you may have seen this at FST Summer 2024), has crafted a production that exuberantly pays homage to the raw authenticity and everlasting impact of trailblazing women within the realm of popular music. From the nostalgic vibes of Woodstock-era folk to the smooth melodies of chart-topping soft rock, this spectacular showcase shines a spotlight on artists who not only mesmerized audiences with their performances but also penned their own soul-stirring songs.
Samantha Duval takes center stage with her mesmerizing vocals, effortlessly reaching the breathtaking highs reminiscent of the iconic Karen Carpenter. Her renditions of classic tunes are a pure delight, capturing the essence of the original artist's performance with a sprinkle of her own magic. Madalyn McHugh, known for her role in the recent hit THREE PIANOS, adds a rockstar edge to the group as she skillfully strums the guitar and tickles the ivories on the piano (naturally). And then, there's Victoria Boland, the powerhouse vocalist whose rendition of Heart's “Barracuda” was nothing short of jaw-dropping, exuding a contagious energy that could have easily filled an entire city block, let alone the cozy confines of the Court Cabaret.
FST's cabaret shows are like a treasure trove of musical tales, sprinkled with trivia about the songs and the talented souls behind them. SONGBIRDS OF THE SEVENTIES a reminder that these melodies were crafted from the depths of genuine human emotions, a rarity in today's world. Each lyric, each note carries the essence of a creator's heart and soul, a precious reminder of our shared humanity.
The show's spotlight on women of the 70s is a celebration in itself, a nod to the voices that shaped an era. And what better way to wrap up this musical journey than with the enchanting Linda Ronstadt, a true Songbird whose melodies continue to echo through time. It's a neat and tidy bow on a performance that honors the power of music and the legacy of its makers.
SONGBIRDS OF THE SEVENTIES has already been extended until September 13th! If you're up for a fun time, make sure to catch this show that will surely uplift your spirits. However, fair warning - after witnessing the dazzling display, you might find yourself itching to splurge on some groovy sequin jumpers and stylish jackets because this exhibit is serving up major retro fashion inspiration! And. as we all know, nothing is a better accessory than a smile!
