MOVIES THAT MATTER Film Series Concludes with 'Dead Man Walking'

The Movies that Matter with Hal Conklin Film Series comes to a close this year with a screening of the 1995 film, Dead Man Walking, on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 7:00pm. Following the series' theme of teaching audiences about forgiveness, loving others, and loving ourselves while providing a renewed enthusiasm for living life with compassion and grace, Dead Man Walking tells the remarkable story of a prisoner on death row who learns to accept God's love and  come out of hiding.
Eric Small Elected to Opera Santa Barbara Board of Directors

Two Santa Barbara Symphony youth ensembles will present free season-ending concerts the weekend of May 20-21. The Symphony's Junior Orchestra will perform works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, and others beginning at 3 pm in First United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 20. The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony will present a program of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Mozart beginning at 4 pm in the Lobero Theatre on Sunday, May 21.

The Granada Theatre announces the screening of Concussion, the next installment of the "Movies That Matter with Hal Conklin" Film Series on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 7:00pm. Based on an incredible true story, Concussion highlights Dr. Bennet Omalu's remarkable discovery of the relationship between football-related concussions and brain damage. Prior to the film screening, guests will enjoy a discussion between series curator and former Santa Barbara mayor, Hal Conklin, and his guests Dr. Stephen Kaminski, Medical Director of Trauma Services at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital; Melissa Grunt, CPNP, Concussion Clinic Nurse Practitioner, Cottage Children's Medical Center; and Laura Capps, Santa Barbara Unified School District Board Member who will discuss sports related head trauma in schools.

Yet, the egg is a broader symbol-one that represents manifestations of fertility beyond pregnancy and childbearing. Gale's intent is to explore the personal and societal imperative to create legacy-whether it be passing on ideas or DNA. One Good Egg invites audiences to accept (and appreciate) the optimism that can flourish in even the most absurd or aching moments.
UCSB Department Of Theater And Dance Premieres NEW WORKS LAB

The UCSB Department of Theater and Dance will present New Works Lab at the Performing Arts Theater. The production is split into two programs, each with two original UCSB student-written plays. Program A will be presented May 11, 19, 20 at 8 PM, and May 13, 21 at 2 PM. Program B will be presented May 12, 13, 18, and 20 at 8 PM.
SB Youth Opera to present BRUNDIBAR

The Santa Barbara Youth Opera, in collaboration with Ojai Youth Opera and the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, will present a fully staged production of Brundibar, Jewish Czech composer Hans Krasa's uniquely affecting children's opera, at the Lobero Theatre on Saturday, May 20. Performances will take place at 2:30 and 5 pm. Tickets cost $22 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.

The third season of the Elmer Bernstein Memorial Film Series continues on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 7:00 pm with the screening of the 1962 film, Birdman of Alcatraz. Featuring one of Elmer Bernstein's most-memorable cinematic scores, the film tells the remarkable story of a federal-prison inmate, Robert Stroud, who becomes a talented ornithologist and published author while in solitary confinement.
