The Granada Theatre Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts (SBCPA) celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the completion of the historic Granada Theatre Restoration Project, and recognizes the vast and diverse programming and performances that have taken the stage at the new theater. Based on feedback from the eight organizations that would become The Granada Theatre's resident companies, the goal of the Renovation Project was to build an extraordinary performance hall that would exceed the needs of the Santa Barbara region's performing arts companies for the next century to come. As one of the most anticipated renovations of its time, the curtains rose on March 6, 2008 for the Grand Reopening and unveiled the beautifully restored theater, and a new beacon within the Santa Barbara community. 
Slo Repertory Theatre Presents Alfred Hitchcock's THE 39 STEPS

The San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre is thrilled to present the hilarious comedy/ thriller THE 39 STEPS, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the book by John Buchan and the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name. The play is a fast-paced whodunit that mixes the 1935 Hitchcock masterpiece with the juicy spy novel by Buchan and a dash of Monty Python comedy.
Calling All Artists! Submissions For Granada Plaza Mural Project Now Open

The Granada Theatre has announced the Plaza Granada Mural Project, a new public art mural project located on the Granada Paseo wall (map here), which connects State Street with The Granada Garage. Professional artists from across the tri-county areas are invited to submit a proposal for this amazing opportunity to make their mark on the Santa Barbara art scene. An initiative of the Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement, this permanent outdoor installation will be highly visible to locals and tourists alike, and will serve to beautify and enhance the paseo, making it safer and more welcoming to pedestrians and theater-goers.

BWW Review: COMMUNICATING DOORS at SBCC Theater Group

Alan Ayckbourne's 'Communicating Doors,' produced by the SBCC Theatre Group, follows Poopay (Felicia Hall), a blue-collar London dominatrix who shows up at a luxury hotel to service wealthy business mogul, Reece (Matt Smith), but instead gets pressured into witnessing his deathbed confession of embezzlement and murder. On the run from Reece's homicidal business partner, Julian (George Coe), who isn't keen on being outed for his part in the murder of Reece's two deceased wives, Ruella (Leslie Gangle Howe) and Jessica (Brittany Harter), Poopay hides in a hotel closet. The closet houses a time portal that takes her back twenty years to the night of Ruella's murder, in the very same hotel suite. Poopay and Ruella team up to prevent the murder, thus changing the past and altering the future for everyone.

PlayFest Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Public Library, and with the support of a Community Arts Grant from the City of Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture, presents the Sixth Annual Festival of New Plays. The staged reading of Steve Karp's Honoree Play, REUNION, will take place in the Santa Barbara Central Library on March 10 at 7p.m. REUNION was selected as the 2018 Honoree play following an international competition. E. Bonnie Lewis and Ken Gilbert of DramaDogs will perform the roles of He and She. Maggie Mixsell of Speaking of Stories, will narrate. Anna Jensen, former Ensemble Theatre dramaturge and current co-host of Theatrixsb podcast, will moderate a post reading talkback between the audience and the playwright. The reading is free.

"Cine en Domingo" Film Series presents La Bamba on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 3:00 pm. A program of The Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement, "Cine en Domingo" films are presented in Spanish with English subtitles. Assemblymember Monique Limon and actor Andy Valdez will host a compelling dialogue discussing important thematic elements of La Bamba, the 1987 film that tells the story of singer Ritchie Valens and his rise to fame with his chart-toping hit, "La Bamba." The "Cine en Domingo" series as a whole showcases both classic and contemporary Spanish language films, with compelling titles chosen to engage the Latino community and all who love this genre of filmmaking.

The Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement is pleased to partner with the Cliff Drive Care Center to screen Toy Story 3, the fourth installment in the 'Movies That Matter with Hal Conklin' Film Series, on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 7:00pm at The Granada Theatre. The evening will also feature a Q & A with Conklin and representatives from the Cliff Drive Care Center to engage the audience in meaningful conversations about the film. Series moderator Hal Conklin will be joined by E. Onja Brown-Lawson, President of the Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara, for a pre-screening discussion with special guest First Lieutenant Victoria Foster of Vandenberg Air Force Base. The Center for Successful Aging (CSA) is pleased to announce their sixth annual benefit concert, "Sophisticated Ladies," featuring an exclusive performance by local music legend Ike Jenkins and his 20 piece Big Band. CSA will also honor the Assistance League of Santa Barbara with the 'Spirit of Successful Aging" award, recognizing their 70 years of service, commitment and dedication to the local community. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2pm at the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Tickets are $100 for patron seats, $25 for adults and $10 for children.
