The Compton's Cafeteria Riot at Tenderloin Museum

The Compton's Cafeteria Riot is an immersive production that places audiences inside a 1960s cafeteria during the 1966 uprising when transgender women and drag queens resisted police harassment in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. The play was co-written by trans activists Collette LeGrande and Donna Personna, along with playwright and co-producer Mark Nassar, and is directed by trans activist and San Francisco theater veteran Ezra Reaves. Throughout August 2026, special performances will feature cameo appearances by local activists and community icons, including a special guest appearance by San Francisco drag legend Peaches Christ on Friday, August 21, 2026. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. at 835 Larkin Street, honoring the 60th anniversary of the riot and California Transgender History Month.
