The season will feature the Bay Area Premiere of The White Chip; Harold Pinter’s tale of attraction and infidelity told backwards and forwards, Betrayal; and more.
Marin Theatre has revealed its 2026/27 season. To be presented August 2026 through June 2027, Marin Theatre’s 60th season includes the World Premiere of Ying Ying Li’s amusing take on finding oneself after a certain age, Dance Moms; the Bay Area Premiere of The White Chip, a moving comedy about addiction and recovery by Sean Daniels; Carey Perloff’s return to Marin Theatre as director of Harold Pinter’s tale of attraction and infidelity told backwards and forwards, Betrayal; and Arthur Miller’s searing classic The Crucible. In addition, the company will celebrate the holidays with the return of last season’s smash hit The Gift of Nothing. All productions will be mounted on the Boyer Main Stage at Marin Theatre, 397 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley. Subscriptions are now available ($199-380 plus $6 order fee); single tickets will be available in the coming months.
The White Chip
Marin Theatre’s 2026/27 season will kick off with the Bay Area Premiere of The White Chip (August 27 – September 20, 2026). Written by acclaimed director, writer, and former California Shakespeare Theater Associate Artistic Director Sean Daniels, this sharp-witted, charming comedy is a semi-autobiographical roller coaster ride through the intoxicating highs and rock-bottom lows of addiction and recovery. Humorous, harrowing, and honest, The White Chip spotlights theatre director Steven, an alcoholic attempting to untangle his flourishing artistic career from his drinking dependencies. After his life and livelihood are upturned, Steven claims Alcoholics Anonymous’ white chip for anyone who has 24 hours of sobriety or a desire to stop drinking. Steven discovers the difficult road to recovery in this moving tale of strength and humanity. After premiering at Merrimack Repertory Theatre, The White Chip was then produced at New York’s 59E59 Theater and was recently seen Off-Broadway at MCC Theater. Talkin’ Broadway said, “This unique dramatic concoction is likely to leave you shaken and stirred with plenty of laughter and sobs.” The New York Times gave it a Critic’s Pick, noting its “Delicate equilibrium between laugh-out-loud comedy and gasp-inducing tragedy. Plays save lives in all kinds of ways. I would bet that The White Chip has, and will.”
Betrayal
Next, the company will present Nobel Prize and Tony Award winner Harold Pinter’s Betrayal (October 22 – November 15, 2026). American Conservatory Theater Artistic Director Emerita Carey Perloff, a frequent Pinter interpreter who worked several times with the late playwright, returns to Marin Theatre to helm this play after directing the company’s wildly successful productions of The Cherry Orchard earlier this year and Waste in 2025. This taut, thought-provoking drama laced with Pinter’s laconic wit illuminates an illicit seven-year affair told backwards and forwards in time — beginning two years after the end of the affair and ending with the first clandestine kiss. Truth lies in the unspoken between lovers and friends in this sensual, scintillating examination of the perils and pleasures of deception. Betrayal premiered at London’s National Theatre in 1978, winning the Olivier Award for Play of the Year. The New York Times commended its “Marvelous scenes, packed with suppressed tension, torn loyalties and confused, unspoken feelings.” Newsweek deemed it “An exquisite play, brilliantly simple in form.” Betrayal debuted on Broadway in 1980, was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film, and has been revived on Broadway three times.
The Gift of Nothing
The company will celebrate the holidays with the return of The Gift of Nothing (December 17 – 27, 2026), directed and choreographed by Bay Area theatre veteran Erika Chong Shuch. Based on the book of the same name by Caldecott Honor recipient Patrick McDonnell, this merry musical for audiences of all ages follows McDonnell’s beloved “Mutts” comic characters, Mooch and Earl. Mooch the dog searches for the perfect gift for his Best Friend Earl the cat, only to discover that the best gift is something that can’t be wrapped — it’s the gift of a friend. The Gift of Nothing is available as an add-on ticket to the 2026-27 season, offering a cheer-filled opportunity to bring the whole family together during the yuletide season.
The Crucible
Marin Theatre rings in 2027 with Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (February 11 – March 7, 2027). One of the American theatre canon’s most acclaimed plays, this timely, compelling drama investigates the power of paranoia, hysteria, and false accusations through the lens of the Puritan pursuit against witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. Strong-willed farmer John Proctor, his wife, and a young servant girl become embroiled in a scandal that sets the town ablaze, with trials in the court of public opinion deciding their fates. The Crucible premiered on Broadway in 1953, winning the Tony Award for Best Play.
The Crucible recently ignited Broadway audiences through last season’s hit play John Proctor is the Villain, a fiercely feminist reexamination of this classic within a modern-day high school classroom. Marin Theatre’s production of The Crucible offers a perfect companion piece to John Proctor is the Villain, which makes its West Coast Premiere at American Conservatory Theater November 12 – December 6, 2026.
Dance Moms
The company will close its season with the World Premiere of Dance Moms (May 20 – June 13, 2027). Written by Ying Ying Li, this lively, unfettered comedy follows a ragtag crew of middle-aged dancers on the heels of their biggest performance yet. Under the tutelage of an uninhibited, unconventional choreographer, the troupe delves deep into their souls in pursuit of their One True Dance, confronting deep-seated truths and discovering the joys of being seen. Dance Moms was a semi-finalist for Premiere Play Festival, a National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, and received a workshop at Colt Coeur.
